Thomas "Hoot" Eugene Matthews

Thomas “Hoot” Eugene Matthews went to cowboy heaven on January 16, 2022, at the age of seventy-seven. Hoot was born in Crestview, Florida and grew up in Palatka, Florida. He graduated from Palatka Senior High School and Florida State University, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. After graduating college, Hoot moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked in computer sales and in later years, for the Conroe Independent School District. He was an active member of the Conroe Lions Club and the West Conroe Baptist Church, and he served for many years on the Horse Committee for the Houston Rodeo. Hoot was always a cowboy at heart. His free time was spent at the rodeo, where he worked as a rodeo clown and bullfighter. In 2020, he was inducted into the All Cowboy & Arena Champions Hall of Fame and to the SC TX Rodeo Ring of Honor. Hoot is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. E.L. Matthews and his twin daughters. He is survived by his loving wife of over 31 years, Kay Harrell Matthews; his sister and brother-in-law Mary Louise and Bob Williams; his children and their spouses Brandy and Mark Voss, Stacy and Ben May, Travis and Melanie Traylor, and Todd and Tracy Traylor; his grandchildren Ella, Cooper, Bodhi, Cameron, Hudson, and Mary-Jane Easton; his sister-in-law Marsha Harrell; and his nieces and nephews and their spouses Jay and Ashley Stewart, Rob and Ann Williams, Alex and Tamara Harrell. A celebration of life will be held at a later date with family in Florida.
