Virgie Bruce Ellington was born on September 1st, 1934, to Henry Sr. and Anna Belle Bruce of Huntsville, Walker County, Texas. After Virgie graduated with honors from Huntsville High School at the age of 16, she was recruited to work at the Murray Insurance Agency. While working there, she started taking classes at Sam Houston State University. Virgie was very good at shorthand and worked as a secretary at the Texas Department of Corrections. After raising her family, she worked and retired from Mitchell Energy. Later, she worked as a secretary for the Head Start Program for The Texas State Board of Education.
In 1953, she met her husband, Oma Lewis Ellington (Lewis), at a community dance. Lewis had asked a friend who the prettiest girl in town was. His friend replied, “Virgie Bruce”. They were married later that year on November 7th, 1953. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple on December 20th, 1960. They spent 32 wonderful years together before his passing in 1992.
Virgie was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on March 28th, 1959. She remained devoted to her faith in Jesus Christ throughout her life by serving in many church positions, loving and serving others, and working in the Dallas and Houston Temples. She served a 2-year mission in the Raliegh-Durham, North Carolina.
Virgie was known for her many talents, including oil painting, cooking, gardening and quilting. She entered her projects in the Montgomery County Fair and took first place numerous times. For many years she was a member of the Woodlands Hiking Club. Despite being a Texan through and through, she traveled all over the world to locations including China, Hong Kong, Italy, Switzerland, Peru, Mexico and many sites in the USA. She loved plants and nature. She was an avid collector of rocks, of all types. Virgie was kind and a friend to everyone. She served others by bringing garden vegetables and home cooked meals to those in need. She often took her children to visit the elderly in nursing homes.
Virgie was predeceased by her parents, Henry Bruce Sr. and Anna Belle Bruce, her husband Oma Lewis, her Brothers Henry Jr, Ray, James and Pat, her daughter Diana, and grandson David.
She is survived by her twin brother Virgil, and brother Mike, 8 children; Dana Lewis (Ruth), Henry Dale, Dennis Mark, Alan Brett (Mistie), Patricia (Greg), Eric Lee (April) David Bruce (Michelle), and Joseph Evan, 28 Grandchildren; Tiffanie, Randy, Blake, Stephanie, Elyce, Alex, Ashleigh, Connor, Nichole, Nicholas, Christopher, Heather, Mandy, Aaron, Amanda, Ryan, Brooke, Zachary, Hayley, Andrew, Austin, Jordan, Devon, Ethan, Katie, Lauren, Ava, and Annabell, 39 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
On Friday, June 26th, a family viewing will be held at 10:00 am and the public viewing shortly after at 10:30 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 25623 Richards Road, Spring, Texas 77385. The funeral will follow at 12:00 pm.
The graveside service will be at 3:00 pm the same day at the Farris Cemetery, FM 1791 (Close to the Farris Chapel) West Sandy, Texas, Walker County.
