Gus is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara, his daughter and son-in-law Jessica and Joseph Carnall of Coral Springs, FL, and his daughter Tarah Stewart of Atlanta, GA. He was “Bud” to his four grandchildren who adored him: Adrian, Campbell, Owen, and Annie.
Gus was born on July 26, 1948 in Brownville, NY. The second of six children, the Brown family lived a humble life on a 62 acre farm. Although the family could not afford a private school education, Gus earned a scholarship to attend Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown, NY and later St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY.
Over his long and varied career, Gus worked as a high school science teacher at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, NY; he was the owner and operator of the much loved Barge Inn in Brockport, NY; he became a Realtor for Schepler Realty in Hamlin, NY; he was the owner and operator of Cheeburger Cheeburger in Naples, FL and later other locations; he went back to school at the age of 60 and earned his PhD in Education; and he ended his career teaching virtual high school in Broward County, FL.
Gus was a lifelong learner. He loved to read, particularly biographies and historical fiction, and typically had multiple books going at any given time. After his retirement, he enjoyed taking online courses in a variety of subjects, mostly involving science or history. A gifted teacher, he was always helping his grandkids with their homework or giving them math worksheets to complete in the summer months.
