Helen G Neuburg

Greenie was born in New York City and was raised in Wellesley, MA, and New York, NY. She attended Swarthmore College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude in 1948. Soon afterward, she married classmate Ned Neuburg, her long-time heartthrob.

There followed several changes of place involving higher education and the demands of the Korean War; during this time Greenie taught at the small independent Windward School in White Plains, NY, and at Georgetown Day School in Washington, DC. After Ned began his career with the U.S. Department of Defense, they settled with their first child near Silver Spring, MD, where she continued teaching at Fairland Elementary School, and they had their second child.

Following a two-year stay in England, where they had their third child, Greenie earned a master's degree in elementary education from The American University, and became Head of the progressive Green Acres School in Bethesda, MD.

After retiring from teaching, Greenie and three former colleagues from Green Acres founded the innovative and much-loved Cheshire Cat Children's Bookstore on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC.

Many years later, Greenie and Ned moved permanently to Princeton, NJ, where Greenie volunteered as a Master Gardener; at the public library, where she sorted children's books and taught English conversation; and for a variety of political causes.

After Ned's death in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Greenie lived at Windrows retirement community in Princeton before moving to Coral Springs, FL, to live with her son Ethan.

Greenie was a life-long learner. Her wide range of interests included art and music, history, travel, gardening, hiking, and birdwatching. She was an avid reader right up until the very end of her life.

She is survived by her three children, Matt, Ethan, and Amy, and by Ethan's son, Nicholas. She is remembered with fondness by all who knew her.
