John was born in Thorold, Ontario, Canada on February 19, 1933. He was the cherished son of the late Anthony and Madeline Ambrosie, and loving brother to the late Frank, Vito and Antoinette DeLazzari.
At the age of 19, John joined the United States Air Force serving on the Aleutian Chain of Islands in Alaska. In 1955 while on leave on Staten Island, John’s cousin arranged a blind date with Ann Romano who would become his wife and “love of his life” on November 11, 1956. They bought a home and began their journey together raising a family on Staten Island.
John was an avid golfer playing whenever possible and participated in many tournaments. He won the Staten Island Golf Classic in 1978 and in1980 made his first hole-in-one at the South Shore Country Club. He was also a great bowler and served as president of his bowling league. Always incredibly social, he could be counted on to liven up a party with his singing and joke telling.
John was very talented in his hobbies of carpentry and masonry work. Eventually retiring from the City of New York as a Heavy Equipment Operator, he moved to South Florida where he would pursue his passion for golf year-round. In retirement, John and Ann enjoyed traveling with their friends to resort destinations in Las Vegas, the Bahamas, Atlantic City and Biloxi.
For the past 25 years, John lived in Shangri-la at Woodmont in Tamarac, where he was affectionately known as the “Mayor”. Always civic minded, he would love to lend his expertise to the community as well as share a laugh with his neighbors. Given John's friendly and gregarious nature, it is no surprise that he and Ann enjoyed a robust social life. In addition to playing cards with friends and neighbors, they reveled in a lively game of Bingo at their favorite spot “Bingo at Four Corners” where they would meet up with a great group of friends. John will also be missed by his friends and fellow parishioners at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Coral Springs where he and Ann attended services.
In addition to being a devoted father to his son Anthony (Gloria), and daughter Mary Ann (Art Dooling), he was a very loving and proud grandfather who doted on his grandchildren Justine, Jonathan and Jack and enjoyed visiting them as often as possible never missing the opportunity to celebrate their milestones. “Uncle Johnny” will also be missed by his loving nieces and nephews.
