He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his daughter Kate and husband Graham, daughter Lisa and partner Daniel, brother Douglas and his wife Nancy, several cousins, nieces and nephews and his 3 grandchildren, Hunter, Hadley and Silas.
John was born on October 22, 1947 in Charleston, West Virginia to Velva See and Milford (Mick) June McDermott.
He graduated from Florida Atlantic University and started his career in education at Hallandale Middle School. It was there that he met a fellow teacher, fell in love and later married, Elaine Marie Bak in 1974. John taught for 8 years and then left to be involved in the family business at Lauderdale Tile.
Over time the couple proudly welcomed 2 children into their home and John was determined to show them the world. By the time Kate finished High school, their family had visited all 50 states and several countries. Travel and family were John's truest passions. Kate and Lisa remember their Dad as an incredibly selfless father who only hoped for happiness and love for his daughters.
John was an amazing man who was a stranger to no one. He had an incredible memory, was passionate about storytelling, teaching and he dedicated his life to his family.
A Memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th at 2pm at Kraeer Funeral Home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John's life.
In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to St. Jude Children's hospital or to an animal shelter of your choice. The family would like to thank all of their family and friends that have reached out and shared fond memories of John in remembrance of him.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kraeercoralsprings.com for the McDermott family.
