OBITUARY

Mark Jeffrey Pietka

July 28, 1950July 16, 2021

Mark Jeffrey John Anthony Pietka passed away peacefully on Friday, July 16, 2021 at his home after a long courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 70 years old. Born to the late Margaret and Edmund Pietka in Stamford, Connecticut, Mark shared his childhood with his older brother Michael and his younger sister JoAnn. The family owned and operated Oven Fresh Bakery which was the center of their lives and a source of many fond memories. It was there that he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Kathleen Fisher.

Throughout his life, Mark always prized education. As a young man, he attended high school at St. John’s Seminary with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement-Graymoor in upstate New York where he cemented his love of learning and made many lifelong friends. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Connecticut. Once his children were grown, he returned to school and received a Doctorate in International Business Management from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

Mark spent his career as an executive in the beverage production industry working for Nabisco, PepsiCo, DelMonte and Cadbury Beverages. His work gave him the opportunity to travel the world; he visited dozens of countries on six of the seven continents. Mark loved his work and valued the relationships that he had with his colleagues. Above all, Mark cherished his family. He loved being a dad…almost as much as he loved being a grandpa.

Mark was predeceased by his parents, Margaret Pietka Rosenzweig and Edmund Pietka, his brother Edmund Pietka and his sister JoAnn Zaveruha, his step-father, Herbert Rosenzweig and his step-brother Robert Rosenzweig. He leaves so many special memories to his lifelong friend and caretaker Kathleen Fisher Pietka, his daughters Jamie Pietka (David) and Bartan Pietka (Chris), his sons David Pietka and Christian Pietka, his grandchildren Bailey, Lexi and Leo, his brother Michael Pietka (Mary), his step-sister Etta Martens (Charlie) and his many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and caretakers.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 26, 2021 at 11am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1401 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs, Florida. Please wear a face mask if you are able to join us in person. The mass will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person via the church's website: www.stelizabethannseton.org

In lieu of flowers, donations to the good works of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, PO Box 300 Graymoor, Garrison, NY 10524 (attention Father Emil Tomaskovic, SA) or the Michael J. Fox Foundation are appreciated.

I will forever miss my dear friend Mark. His calming tone and quick wit will never be replaced by anyone I will ever meet. Mark graced us all with his friendship and caring personality. He influenced me both in business with his ideas and strategies, and most importantly as a father. When I just became a Dad in 1996, Mark was the one that took me aside and always had a kind word of advice, love and patience. I will never forget how he prompted and urged me for months until I signed on my newborn son for the Florida College Prepaid program. Thank you Mark. My son is about 6 months away from graduating college through the program Mark insisted I sign up for. He insisted because he cared. Mark always cared. He loved his Cadbury people and we all loved him more. God bless and keep you Mark, I will always remember you and I thank you for your friendship and kindness, and of course that funny wit of yours that always came at the most appropriate times. To the entire Pietka family, I am so sorry for your loss. This was a special man and I wish to share that he was also very much-loved outside of your loving embrace by friends and colleagues everywhere. Family was everything to him . He touched all that ever met him one way or another. People either loved Mark or loved Mark more. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I would like to share that Mark was always a great person. He was always smiling and a very intelligent man. I had the privilege of meeting him many years ago, first as a colleague and co-worker and later as my boss, mentor, and friend.
Widely known from Mexico to Argentina and the Caribbean, as well as, here in the United States, Mark was a very well recognized person for his ability and leadership. Many people remember him because he left a deep mark during his professional career by touching them as well as helping them grow professionally and personally. A tireless fighter for his goals!

During his Presidency at the ISBT, colleagues from the most important companies related to beverages, always recognized his wise ideas and contributions.

Mark was always a gentleman and a peacemaker. Always sharing his experiences and was ready to listen and give a helping hand, even for personal needs. I proudly tell you that my gratitude toward him will be profound as he welcomed my family and I to this great country not just as another employee, but as a sincere friend.
God will be happy to receive you, Mark! The impact that you had, not just in my life, but in many other lives will live forever in our hearts. You will forever be in our hearts and we will always remember you with joy!

Mark Jeffery John Anthony are only a few of the names you carried through life. Growing up there were so many more that I am not able to include here, but I am most proud to call you cousin! You have certainly remained strong and brave in the face of the many challenges you were given. When you stood in the storm and weren't blown away by the winds, you adjusted your sails and continued the journey.
Your earthly journey is now complete. I have no doubt you will be welcomed home with these words:

"Well done, well done
My good and faithful one
Welcome to the place where you belong
Well done, well done
My beloved child
You have run the race and now you're home
to the place where you belong"

I am so sorry for the loss all of you must be feeling. At the end of my days, I hope I am afforded the opportunity to be comfortable in my home surrounded by my family like Mr. Pietka was. Watching the cars come and go over the years was a testament to the love you all felt for your dad/friend. Please accept my sincerest condolences. My family is away and unable to attend the services but please know that we hold you in our hearts.

As Mark’s friend, and caregiver, I’d like to say Thank You to several people who were part of “Marky Mark”’s journey. Without them … well, it would have been a rocky road.
Dr. Bridget Silva, Dr. Jeffrey Gaier, Dr Patricio Espinosa and Dr. Sameea Husain-Wilson, and their staff. Vitas Hospice who cared for him lovingly in his final days, especially Dr. Jim Leung and Richard Mahoney.
Mind and Mobility where Mark had his therapies by therapists extraordinaire.
Bob and Eli Wilson, Jim “Jimmy John” Drummond, and Father Kelly and Our parish family. Lastly, his friend Father Bill Linakis. Friends from their seminary days since 1964, along with his other classmates, they reunited at Reunions and Mark traveled annually to visit Bill in Vancouver.
Mark had an amazing Funky Bunch.
Thank you all and God ‘s blessings on you.
