Michael, affectionately called, Mike, Mikey, Miguel, Pops, ‘Cheeks’, by his family and friends, was born on March 26, 1986 in Plantation, Florida. After kindergarten, he attended North Lauderdale Elementary School. After the family moved to Coral Springs, in 1994, he attended Parks Spring Elementary; Forest Glenn Middle and Coral Springs High School. At Coral Springs High School he was a member of the Coral Springs High School Chorus. During high school, he earned a ‘Superior’ at the state level for high school vocal solo performance competition. At eighteen, he graduated from Coral Springs High School and went on to college at the University of Central Florida, (UCF) in Orlando, where he auditioned and earned a coveted spot in that university’s chorus. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Hospitality from UCF. His health prevented him from fully participating during his time at UCF, so he returned home to Coral Springs. Despite those health challenges, he continued college by taking classes at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton. He later transferred to Florida International University, (FIU) where he lived on campus, and, over time, pushing through his health challenges, took classes through a hybrid schedule. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management from FIU.
At age nine, Michael was selected to be a member of the prestigious, Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir, and later its group for changed voices: The Second Generation Singers. He sang with the organization until his graduation from high school. He often said, singing with the Singing Sons made him very happy. He sang under three renowned music directors during his time with the Singing Sons, and enjoyed many friendships there.
In June of 2024, due to a major medical event, Michael’s health took a drastic turn. He spent many months afterward in hospitals, rehabilitation centers; and going to medical appointments, too numerous to mention. Through it all, he never lost hope and tried always to be pleasant. He developed friendships in the medical teams at the hospitals and could be heard laughing out loud with someone who had come to assist him. He never forgot to say ‘Thank you’ to anyone who came to his hospital room to provide a service. Staff members would stop by, sometimes only to say hello.
Michael made an impression on everyone he met. He was warm, friendly, articulate, smart, respectful, kind, playful, yet firm when he needed to be. He was a master at managing and advocating for his health; a master at computers and research, in his efforts toward finding treatment for his health conditions. He spoke with the doctors in terms that sometimes left them asking how he knew so much, and whether he had spent some time in medical school. Though he was often not feeling well, he tried to keep up with his friends. Above all, he loved music and made ‘beats’ as a hobby from his bedroom studio, when his health allowed. At an early age, he taught himself to play the drums, and was very good at it.
He loved his family, fervently; his twin brothers, Philip and Robert were his absolute idols; he loved spending time with them; they could get him to smile no matter how badly he was feeling. They are very grateful for the opportunity to have spent recent days with him. He was the heart-beat of his parents; his favorite request of them was “come give me a hug”. He would not let them leave without saying how much he loved them. The echo of his voice saying, “I love you, mom” fills the loneliness of his passing. He gave the warmest hugs.
On the evening of January 1, 2026, during a hospital admission, Michael left us for the warm embrace of our loving Lord. He is missed more than words can ever express. Our hearts are broken beyond repair, yet, we feel assured that, as we love him, so very deeply, Jesus, who gave him life as a gift to us, loves him even more, and so, He took him home to rest from all his pain and years of illness. He fought a valiant fight.
Michael is survived by his parents, Peter and Cynthia Grocher, his twin brothers, Philip and Robert Grocher; nephew and niece Jacob and Eva Grocher; sister-in-law, Jennifer Grocher; aunts, Beverley McKane and Sandra Grocher; uncles, Herman and Audley Grocher; Donovan Ennis, Delroy Ennis, Albert Stephenson, Roderick Stevenson; lots of cousins; his Godmother, Olga Cervantes.
