Rose Helen Calvina, age 105, passed away peacefully at her home in Tamarac, FL on May 11, 2020, surrounded by her granddaughter, Valerie and her long- time, loving care givers, Samantha, Golda and Cordelia. In addition to Valerie (Jim), Rose is survived by her daughter, Anita (Bill), granddaughter, Linda, great grandsons, William and Julian and many nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Alfred.
Rose was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. She moved to Allentown, PA, where she raised her family and then moved to Broward county 47 years ago.
Growing up during the Great Depression taught Rose not only the value of a dollar, but also the importance of being self reliant and independent. Rose lived in her own home and until three years ago managed much of her household activities. She never, however, ceased to be totally engaged with overseeing her household and in discussing current news events.
Rose volunteered for the Broward County Republican Party. Often called a “feisty Sicilian”, Rose loved cooking, enjoying a glass of rose wine and going to the beach to smell the sea and listen to the sound of the ocean. A sharp dresser, Rose was never without lipstick and rouge. Even in her final days, people around Rose always knew where she stood on an issue -- sharp minded and never shy about stating her opinions.
She also loved listening to the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como and Connie Francis. One of Rose’s favorite songs was “Que Sera, Sera”, which she sang on her 105th birthday party.
To those she leaves behind, Rose will always be remembered as someone who you could always count on to be there for you day and night, who never wavered in her beliefs, who believed in the importance of family first and who enjoyed life’s simple pleasures.
The family would like to thank her devoted caregivers and Trustbridge Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care to Rose.
Donations may be made to Catholic Charities and Trustbridge Hospice.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 15, 2020, 8:45 - 9:30am at Kraeer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 1 N. State Road 7, Margate. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 10:00 am, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 1400 S. State Road 7, North Lauderdale. Interment to immediately follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, North Lauderdale. Due to the Covid-19 Virus, visitation, Mass and graveside service will be limited to ten people.
