Sheldon Douglas Moldoff

April 14, 1920February 29, 2012

Moldoff, Sheldon, Comic Book Legend of the Golden Age of Comics, of Lauderhill, FL passed away on February 29, 2012 at the age of 91. Shelly, as he was known to his fans, got his start in the comic industry more than 70 years ago drawing, believe it or not, filler items. In the 1940's, the so-called Golden Age of Comics, he drew such strips as Hawkman, Kid Eternity and the Black Pirate. He also drew covers for the first appearances of Green Lantern and The Flash. But Muldoff is best known for a 15 year run with Batman from 1953 to 1967. He drew some of the goofiest, but beloved Batman episodes ever, including Zebra Batman and The Mermaid Batman. He introduced Batwoman and the original Batgirl. Moldoff left comics in 1967, but later did an animation feature film, Marco Polo Jr. He drew comics for Big Boy and Red Lobster Restaurants, Blockbuster Videos and others. Moldoff was a regular at conventions, selling drawings and signing autographs. "When they treat you with respect, there is a certain amount of satisfaction, " Shelly would say, " I've done something that I have dedicated my whole life to and it was appreciated by a lot of people." The extremely talented and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather will be dearly missed. He is survived by his sons, Richard Moldoff and Kenneth Moldoff, daughter, Ellen Moldoff Stein, son-in-law, Jeffrey Stein, grandchildren, Anthony Moldoff, Lizabeth Moldoff Curtis and her husband, Robert Curtis, Kendra Moldoff, Max Stein, great grandchildren, Samantha, Joseph and Brittney Curtis. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 11:00am with a service to follow at Noon at Kraeer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 1655 University Drive, Coral Springs.

I met Shelly at several Comic Cons over the years and he was always a joy. What a lover of life and the comic industry. I have several of his Batman art works hanging in my home and never get tired of seeing them. I always admired tha this wife traveled with him to these Cons and was always engaged in the conversation. I bought a large Curt Swan Superman in a Detroit Con Auction 17 years ago and after Curt signed it, I gave it to Shelly who took it home, colored it and signed it and then shipped it back to me. It is one of my prized possesions. Sheldon - you will never be forgotten. Thanks for all! Vince Mattawan, MI
