Tyler Joseph-Hanner was born on August 6, 2003, in Brooklyn, NY, to Michelle Hanner. In 2011, the family relocated to Florida, where Tyler’s love for the performing arts flourished. He discovered his passion for acting while attending Ramblewood Middle School, where he played the Wolf in Shrek Jr. and was part of the supporting cast in Hamilton. Throughout high school, Tyler honed his craft, participating in the Next Stop Broadway Summer Acting Program, where he took on memorable roles in Chicago and The Greatest Showman.
Tyler graduated from Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, FL, in 2021 and went on to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee. A fourth-year Theatre Performance scholar, his talent and dedication to the arts shone both on and off the stage. Throughout his time at FAMU, Tyler graced the Essential Theatre with unforgettable performances in productions such as Thoughts of a Colored Man (Depression), Chicken & Biscuits (Kenny), Romeo and Juliet: A Miami Love Story (Peter), and The Wiz (The Royal Keeper), a role that earned him a Kennedy Center American College Theatre Irene Ryan nomination for an acting award at the Region IV Festival.
Tyler’s contributions were not limited to acting. He also made a significant impact behind the scenes in technical theatre and production management. His credits include serving as light board operator for Pipeline, stage manager for The Waiting Room, and assistant stage manager for A Cool Drink of Water and Two Trains Running. Tyler’s professionalism, poise, and passion for theatre extended to his work as an usher and house manager, where he greeted patrons with warmth and a smile. His ability to light up any room with his energy, kindness, and infectious laugh was one of his many gifts.
A truly gifted artist with a heart full of generosity, Tyler was beloved by his family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know him. His passing has left an irreplaceable void, but his spirit, talent, and infectious joy will continue to inspire all who loved him.
Tyler is survived by his parents, Michelle Hanner and Robert Hanner; his brothers, Anthony Cook and Alexander Hanner; his sisters, Shante Leslie, Karesia Faint, and Britney Hanner; his grandmother, Vanella Rose; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
