In 1975, Mr. Wallace Dunn asked the Benton Harbor Area School District to hire a fledgling, 23-year-old kid as one of his guidance counselors at Benton Harbor High School. This apprehensive young man was still “wet behind the ears,” and he was amazed at the amount of confidence Mr. Dunn displayed in the young man’s ability to do the job successfully.

I must say that I was that young man, and I will be eternally grateful for Mr. Dunn’s leadership, guidance, direction, and advice.

I will definitely be praying for Lawrence and Terrance (my former students), Pat (my former co-worker), and all the other family members. May God bless and sustain each and every one of you during this difficult time.

Our sincere prayers are with all of his family members during this most difficulty time. Wallace was indeed a gentle and kind person who brought joy to those who knew him. We always found him encouraging and served as an inspiration to others. As someone who met Wallace when he served in the position of high school principal in Benton Harbor, Michigan some decades ago, I learned then that one of the key measures of effective leadership was how well one engages and garners the respect and admiration of the young people one serves and indeed that he had. He was loved, respected and appreciated. May you rest knowing that you impacted the lives of so very many🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿.

Mr Dunn was an inspiration to me. I was his paperboy and sitter. He taught me about stability in education and how important it is. He was a father figure through and through. I'll always remember your smile.

Mr. Dunn
Was the epitome of Black education. He was a man of tall statue, not only in his height. But, with a great heart and passion for his students. Thank you for pouring into me from Benton Harbor Junior High to Benton Harbor Senior High School. Rest in Heaven.
