

Jeanette Norris Gingold, a resident of Croton-on-Hudson, passed away on January 10, 2026. She was 82 years old. Jeanette was born on August 11, 1943 in Culcairn, New South Wales, Australia to the late Bernard and Vera (Radley) Tyler. Before her retirement, she worked for many years as a book editor. During her earlier childhood, she grew up on a sheep station in Australia where she assisted on the farm. She moved to Sydney after high school, where she went to Sydney University to study French and psychology. She worked at the Labor and National Services to assist migrants with employment. In 1964, she visited the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, where she met a young and dashing naval officer named Joel on his last day in Sydney. They went on their first date to the Taronga Zoo and Joel left Sydney later that night. When Joel was discharged from his service from the Navy six weeks later, he went back in January and got engaged to Jeanette. A year later they were wed in Sydney in December of 1965 and returned to the United States. She became a citizen while retaining her Australian citizenship and settled in Croton-on-Hudson, where they raised their family. Her first job was an assistant in Croton High School and then she became an editor for Reader’s Digest for over 20 years first in Condensed Books and then for the magazine. After retirement, she freelanced for major publishers. She frequently traveled with her family within the United States, Canada and several countries in Europe. She traveled with her kids several times to Australia. She also loved quilting but was especially passionate about knitting and loved to read novels and non-fiction. She also belonged to a couple of knitting and book clubs and did some charity knitting and quilting. She belonged to The Croton Caring Committee for medical transportation.
She is survived by her devoted husband Joel, her sons Michael and Daniel (Lesley), her grandchildren Henry and Catherine and numerous cousins.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13th from 2-4 & 7-9pm at Edward F Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520. A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14th at 11am at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Bethel Cemetery, Old Post Road, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520.
