It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew Peter Sorenson on July 6, 2025, at the age of 41. Born on October 30, 1983, to Fred Andrew Jr. and Lynn Ann (Sergel) Sorenson, Matthew was a beloved son, brother, partner, cousin, and friend.
Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Fred and Lynn Sorenson; his devoted sister, Jessica Ann Sorenson; brother, Andrew (Fernanda); sister in law, Digna; his cherished girlfriend of 14 years, Eileen Hecker; and nieces, Lynn and Daniella. He is also survived by his aunts, Diane (Gerry) Scialo, Gail McDonald, and June Sorenson; cousins Stephanie, Marshall, Casey (Kallin), Michael, and Karen (David); and by many more aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors, and beloved pets who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew; grandparents, Raymond and Dorothy Sergel, and Fred Sr. and Myrtle Sorenson; his aunt, Noreen Walsh; his uncle, John Black; and several cousins.
Matthew was known for his warmth, wit, and boundless curiosity. A gifted storyteller, he had a unique ability to turn everyday moments into colorful tales, often calling family multiple times a day just to share a story, like a recent sighting of snakes at the end of his street. He had a deep love for walking through town, stopping at local stores, and striking up conversations with anyone who would listen.
He shared a close bond with his mother, often chatting about friends, neighbors, and the day-to-day goings-on in their lives. His humor and laughter were contagious, and he found joy in making others smile.
A graduate of Croton-Harmon High School, Matthew was given the opportunity in his youth to work at Croton Point Park—an experience he remembered fondly.
His kind heart, love for community, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Matthew’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Holy Name of Mary Church, Brain Injury Association of New York State, the Brain Injury of New York State, 5 Pine West Plaza, Suite 506, Albany, NY 12205 (https://bianys.org/donate) or a charity of your choice.
