OBITUARY

Bill Shoemaker

May 2, 1951December 27, 2019

Kenneth “Bill” W. Shoemaker, age 68 of Highland, IN, passed away suddenly on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Community Hospital in Munster, IN. He was born on May 2, 1951 in Hammond, IN to his loving parents Kenneth W. and Florence (Compher) Shoemaker. Bill was always a busy body which made truck driving the perfect career for him. Throughout his life he spent many years taking trips on his motorcycle. He was an avid gun collector and became a NRA Certified Instructor. His family knew him as a true Marksman who enjoyed any time spent at the shooting range. Boy Scout troops benefited from his expertise at this outdoor event and he was always willing to give the time to help support them. Reading the newspaper, books, or any material he could get his hands on is how he liked to spend down time. Crossword puzzles were a part of his conversations with family and friends and he laughed at the comics each Sunday. Telling jokes is how he will be remembered and anytime you come across something that really makes you laugh, think of Bill fondly. His good character and charm will truly be missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He is survived by his devoted children, Therese (Kevin) Shoemaker, Andria (Andy) Shoemaker, William (Michelle) Shoemaker; four grandchildren, Baden, Rowin, Elias, Annie; siblings, Barbara (John) Cooper, Rob (Galia) Shoemaker, Tom (Nancy) Shoemaker, Judy DeVries, Mary Shoemaker, Donnie (Michelle) Shoemaker; and dear friend, Dennis (Cindy) Schulte; many nieces and nephews; along with Andria Holsclaw the mother of his children. He was preceded in death by his parents; Kenneth Shoemaker and Florence Hofrichter; sister, Carol Shoemaker; nephew, Mike Shoemaker; and dear friend, Ralph Fleming. Friends and family may call upon Chapel Lawn Funeral home from 2PM – 7 PM on Saturday, January 4, 2020. To respect and honor Bill, no formal funeral services will be held. Cremation services will take place following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Miracle Ride Foundation – c/o: Gino Johnson at Peachin, Schwartz & Weingardt - 9775 Crosspoint Blvd. Suite 100 Indianapolis, IN 46256. I've known Bill a long time through trucking. He was an exceptional guy who never hesitated helping others. He loved talking about his grandchildren as well as his children. I never met them but I felt like I knew them.
I'm going to miss him and his stories and jokes.
RIP my friend.

For all of Shoe's loved ones may the memories and the laughter get you through as you say your goodbyes.
Shoe and I had quite a few conversations about so many things, his knowledge of guns being one of the most insightful of them. I grew up in NW Indiana and remembering places from our childhood that are no longer there made for some bittersweet conversations. His obit mentions the jokes and the laughter and boy is that so accurate. His sense of humor was one of the realist things about him. Many found it offensive, but not this girl. We laughed pretty much in any interaction we had, whether in person on the phone or on Facebook. RIP YOU OLD CODGER!!!!
