David A. Andrews, 93, of Schererville, IN, passed away on April 23rd, 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife and children. David was a treasured pillar of the community who dedicated his life to education and giving back.
David was born February 1st, 1933, in East Chicago, IN to Oliver and Lilian Andrews. They had six children - Oliver, Margaret, Charles, Dorothy, Geraldine, and David - of which, he was the youngest. His parents passed at an early age, and he was raised by his sister, Geraldine.
David is survived by his wife, Maryann; his children, David (Laura) Andrews, Margaret (late Carey) Govert, Wendy (John) Evans, and Jane (Andrew) Dvorscak. He is survived by his grandchildren, Amy (Paul Schroeder) Troy, Charlie (Grace Calderone) Evans, Sam Evans, Andrew (Mallory) Dvorscak, Sean Dvorscak, and Rachel (Noah Salaman) Andrews; and his great-grandchildren, Julian Calderone-Evans, and Wren Dvorscak. David was also a lover of all animals and considered his pets as his other children. He enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels in his backyard, including two he nicknamed Rocky and Scotty, even if he was never sure they were the same squirrels every time.
David attended Hammond Tech High School and, after graduation in 1951, joined the Navy and served from 1951-1959. Upon his return, he pursued his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education at Ball State University, where he met his future wife, Maryann Garvey. They were married in 1960 and were together for nearly 66 years.
David continued his public service as a teacher, and eventually a principal in the Lake Central School Corporation from 1960 until his retirement in 1995. He occasionally substituted as a principal after his retirement, much to the delight of his grandchildren who were now students in the same school system. David was a dedicated supporter of the Lake Central Hockey Club as an active member of the coaching and fundraising teams. He continued his love of education through volunteer work at the Schererville One Room School House.
David spent his summers with family, friends, and dogs in Bemidji, MN, teaching each successive generation where the “secret hole” on Big Lake was, how to clean a fish, and how to enjoy the simple pleasures with a nightly bowl of ice cream. He was an active member of St. Michael’s Parish, and a longtime volunteer of the Meals on Wheels program in the region area. David was a world traveler, having visited many countries, which paired with his love of history. He channeled that love of history in a local capacity to his work with the Historical Society of Schererville. In 2020, his service to the community and the state of Indiana were recognized with him being a recipient of The Golden Hoosier award.
David lived his life in a way we should all strive to be. He will be a dearly missed member of his family and his community. His legacy has touched many lives, and his dedication to giving back is a rare and cherished gift.
