Donna Lou McKown

Donna Lou (nee Schroeder) McKown, age 79, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2017 at St. Margaret Health Center of Dyer with her loving family at his side. Donna was born January 24, 1937 in Hammond, Indiana to the late Henry and Emma Lou (Ryan) Schroeder. Also preceding her in death is her brother, Buddy Schroeder. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 61 years, Robert Carl McKown; sons, Stephen (Gloria), Andrew (Melinda), and Timothy (Patricia) McKown; grandchildren, Adam (Allyson), Jacob (Jenevieve), Benjamin (Meghan) McKown, Brooke (Stanko) Gligic, Victor (Ashley) Vaughan; great grandchildren, Kierstyn, Emmersyn, Gabriela, Aleksandar, Victor, and Brantley; sister, Barbara (David) Vitkus. After raising her sons, she returned to her education, and fulfilled her passion, received her Master's degree from Purdue Calumet and became an elementary teacher. She taught 5th grade at South Ridge Elementary for over 25 years. Donna loved spending time with her family and celebrating events and holidays, big and small. During these celebrations, she would take and print photos and hand out personalized scrap books to her family to remember it. Her generosity and caring was shown by her sending annual Christmas cards, birthday cards, and cards of encouragement to her family, friends, and including her hundreds of students she had taught throughout the years. Donna will be greatly missed by those who loved her. Visitation will be Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at Dyer Baptist Church (735 213th St. Dyer, Indiana 46311) from 10:00 am until the time of her funeral at 1:00 pm.
