Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene “Jimmy” Marchese; her son, Scott Marchese; and her sister, Carrie Potocki. She leaves behind her sons, Anthony Marchese, Thomas Marchese, and James (Dominica) Marchese.
Gladys was a cherished Nana to Jessica (Eric) Baker, Anthony (Christy) Marchese, Michael (Suzanne) Marchese, Larissa (Jeremy) Melf, Melody (Andy) Dickeson, Lesli Marchese, Taylor (Dustin) Putman, Angelique (Brian) Harris, and Samantha (Andrew) Hudak. She was also a proud great-Nana to Noah, Addison, Bristol, Hazel, Patrick, Caitlyn, Leyani, David, Alida , Kaelyn, and Amelia.
Gladys is also survived by her brother, Vernon (Susan) Dolberry; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and loved ones.
Gladys loved her family deeply, and nothing was more important to her than the people she loved. She had an incredible love for animals and a special place in her heart for the many furry companions who came into her life over the years. She was also a devoted Chicago sports fan who loved cheering on the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox—through the good seasons and the not-so-good ones.
Anyone who knew Gladys knew she had a personality all her own. She was strong, loving, wonderfully spicy, and never afraid to let you know exactly what she thought. She could make you laugh, keep you on your toes, and make sure you knew just where you stood—but underneath that sass was a tremendous amount of love for her family. That combination of spice and love was simply Nana, and it is something her family will miss more than words can say.
Her greatest legacy is the family she leaves behind. Her love will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched. There will be stories told, memories shared, laughter when someone remembers something only Nana would have said or done, and countless moments when her family wishes she were still there to share them.
Gladys was deeply loved, and the space she leaves behind can never truly be filled. Her family will carry her memory, her strength, her love, and undoubtedly a little bit of her spiciness with them always.
She will be greatly missed and forever loved.
A Memorial Visitation for Gladys will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307.
