Obituary of Harold Frederick Sitz
Harold F. Sitz, age 73, of Dyer, IN, passed away on October 2, 2022. Harold was born June 6, 1949 in Chicago, IL to Fredrick Sitz and Virginia (Walley) Sitz. Harold is survived by his wife Deborah Sitz; daughter, Julie Sitz; his son, David (Jennifer) Sitz; his sisters, Janice Zebracki and Sandra Losiniecki; his grandson, Lucas Sitz; and his granddaughter, Ella Sitz. Harold was an avid scouter, joining the Boy Scouts of America as a youth in the 1960’s. He continued serving in many roles, including Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 490 in Dolton, IL, Calumet District Committee Member, Calumet District Shooting Sports Chairman, Camp Frank S. Betz Property Committee Member, and Committee Member of Venturing Crew 422 in Oak Forest, IL. He was particularly active in the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s honor society, volunteering his time as Ceremonial Team Advisor and Associate Lodge Advisor to Michigamea Lodge 110. During his tenure in Scouting, Harold was recognized with the Lodge Service Award, Founder’s Award, Silver Beaver, District Award of Merit, and the George Meany Award. Beyond formal acknowledgement, he was continually working, often behind the scenes, on projects at Camp Frank S. Betz. Harold served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970, honorably discharged as a Specialist 4. He continued supporting the military through the Disabled American Veterans organization and the local VFW. He also served with the Selective Service System as a District Appeal Board Member of the State of Indiana. Harold retired from Gateway Construction Company in 2011 after 37 years as an ironworker and member of Ironworker’s Local 1. During drives and walks around the Chicago area, he would often point out buildings, bridges, and other structures he had worked on – proud of a job well done. From the day they each were born, Harold loved to spend time with his grandchildren. As soon as they were old enough, Lucas and Ella would come to Chicago for “Summer Adventure” and set out exploring the city, going to the family farm for shooting lessons, and trying new food and activities. Harold was incredibly proud of all of their accomplishments, eagerly sharing the news with anyone who would listen.
