Obituary of Mr.  Leo "Rollie" Roland Singer
Leo Roland (Rollie) Singer 1939-2020 Leo Roland (Rollie) Singer of Westville, In passed away at LaPorte Hospital on May 25, 2020. Leo was born June 30, 1939 to the late Sylvia and Roland Singer Sr. of Michigan. He was 80 years old. He attended Hammond Tech High School and then served as an M.P. in the US Army. He had been stationed in Augsburg, Germany at the same time Elvis Presley served and where his oldest daughter was born. On April 22, 1967 he married Charlene Heldt at the minister’s home in Hammond, IN. Leo had been employed by Knoerzer Cadillac in Hammond and also at the railroad. At time of marriage Leo was employed at Pullman Standard in Hammond. He then went into the automobile glass & trim business where he worked as a glazier, glass installer and a body man. He then went onto rebuilding cars which he thoroughly enjoyed. Leo’s hobbies were hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his father in Michigan going hunting. One of his favorite hunting trips was to Canada with his son Mark to hunt black bear!! He also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports when he was able to. He also enjoyed going to the casino. Leo loved his family very much and loved family gatherings. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Charlene Singer (nee Heldt), four daughters, JoAnn Torok, Sandy Riley, Jessica Spurlock (Steve), Jennifer Schuljak (Tom), three sons, Rollie Singer (Sherry), Brian Singer (Jenn), Mark Singer (Holly) and last but not least his canine best friend Ms. Lilly. Leo (referred to as “Poppy”) has 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren whom he loved very much. Many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sisters Diane Tippins, Mary Singer, Roberta Dabbs (Jack) of Tennessee, Bernice Fouts of Florida, Renee Vetterello, Patrice Jarzynka (Richard), Kathy Freitas, Rhonda Day (Jerry) all of Michigan; two brothers Jerry Balder (Evie) of Tennessee and Wally Singer (Debbie) both of Michigan. Preceded in death by his father, Leo Roland Singer Sr. mother Sylvia Bonnell Singer Balder, step-father Albert Balder, brothers Richard Singer, Charles Singer, Sammy Singer. Also preceded in death by his beloved chihuhua “Lady”. Funeral Services are being conducted by Pastor Steve Galloway at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crown Point, IN.
