Lewis Michael Sheffield, age 65 of Gary, IN, passed away at home on Saturday, May 25 2013. He fought a very hard, long, courageous battle with cancer with untold strength and determination. He was the rock everyone depended upon. He will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him. Lewi is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Jeanie Sheffield (Lynch) of Gary, IN. He is survived by his children: Mike (Stephanie) Sheffield of Griffith, IN, twin daughters: Kelli and Kerri Sheffield of Gary, IN. He is also survived by his grandsons: Trevor and Danny Sheffield of Griffith, IN; sisters: Teresa Robinson of Griffith, IN and Melinda York of Owensboro, KY; and sister in laws: Terrie (Ric) Funston of St. John, IN and Leigh (Joe) Grossman of Lexington, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents: LB and Ouida Sheffield; and mother and father in law: Norman and Norma Lynch. Lewi is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, friends and family. Lewi was retired from Mittal Steel (Inland). He served four years in the U.S. Army, serving as a Nike Missile crewman, attaining the rank of SP5. He held a private pilot's license and was an avid RC flyer. He was an IMAC member and flew his planes in contests all over the Midwest region. He loved to golf and fish, but as much as he loved flying, golfing and fishing nothing compared to his love for spending time at Koontz Lake, IN with his entire extended family. Above and beyond all that, however, what meant the most to him was spending time with his son and grandsons. To him they were the world. Lewi's daughters are severely handicapped and he devoted his life loving and caring for them as only a few could imagine. Not one day in 46 years of marriage, did he ever fail to tell Jeanie how much he loved her. A private ceremony will be held for burial officiated by Rev. Ron York of Arcadia, FL. Family and friends are invited to share in Lewi's celebration of life at the family home at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday May 28, 2013. Please contact family directly for details. In lieu of flowers, if you are joining the family in the celebration of life, please bring a helium balloon for Kelli and Kerri. Condolences may be offered by visiting www.chapellawnfunerals.com.
