Mary Ann was a woman of deep love, fierce loyalty, and unforgettable spirit. She lived life with curiosity, strength, and an unmistakable individuality that made everyone around her feel both welcomed and amazed. To know her was to experience a truly rare and vibrant soul.
Born to Pam and Victor Camarena, Mary Ann was a loving daughter who never quite fit into anyone else’s mold — and never tried to. She marched to the beat of her own drum, unapologetically herself in every stage of life. She is also survived by her cherished in-laws, Peter and Joyce Merkle, whose love and care for her through the years brought comfort and support.
Mary Ann was a devoted wife to Tim Merkle, with whom she shared a marriage built on love, patience, and plenty of spirited debate. She was a loving dog mom to Stewie Merkle, her constant companion. She was a protective and nurturing sister to two siblings, Kim (Rob) Buford (Camarena), and Mark Camarena. Mary was a loving sibling-in-law to Peter, Mark Merkle and Mark’s fiance, Holly, and shared a special bond with Holly’s daughter, Kayla. To her extended family, especially her cousins and Godfather, David Camarena, she was a source of joy, laughter, and steadfast connection.
Mary Ann had a special bond with children, especially her nephews, Luke and Matthew Buford, and her youngest cousin, AJ Verduzco. Whether through a shared story, a kind word, or a silly moment, she made children feel seen, safe, and loved.
She had a passion for travel and an appreciation for the wonder of the world. From quiet, reflective road trips to the rush of new cities, she approached each adventure with open eyes and a full heart. She loved good music, especially live concerts, and could often be found swaying to her favorite songs, completely immersed in the sound and the moment.
Mary Ann found beauty in the unexpected and joy in the offbeat. She had a lifelong love of estate sales and thrift stores, not just for the bargains, but for the stories tucked into forgotten corners. Her home was filled with quirky treasures and sentimental oddities — each piece holding a memory, a laugh, or a piece of her soul.
Though she had her share of strong opinions — especially about her medical care — Mary Ann had a deep appreciation for those who truly listened. She was especially grateful for the compassion and care of Dr. Krueger, whose humanity and honesty earned her trust and respect during the most difficult days.
Mary’s final wishes were as unique as she was. As per one of her last wishes, her ashes will be privately released in the waters of the Venetian in Las Vegas by her cousin, Tara Verduzco (Camarena) — a symbolic and slightly illegal farewell filled with meaning and mischief. It is a gesture that perfectly captures her spirit: bold, beautiful, and completely her own. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you to donate to cure.childrenscancer.org or honor her memory by doing something she loved: take a spontaneous trip, attend a live concert, adopt a pet, buy something odd at a garage sale, or simply drink a McDonald’s Coke and think of her. Let her memory inspire you to live just a little louder and love just a little harder.
Mary leaves behind a legacy of authenticity, love, humor, and resilience. She taught us that life is meant to be lived fully — with passion, courage, and just the right amount of sparkle. She will be dearly missed, always remembered, and forever loved.
A visitation for Mary will be held Sunday, July 27, 2025 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307.
