Mary is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Kathy (David) Zerr; daughter, Cindy (late David) Mako, three granddaughters, Nicole (Adam) Mercadante, Natalie Zerr, and Noelle Zerr; two grandsons, Zach (Abby) Mako and Matt Mako; six great-grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Mako, Misha, Evie, and Max Karasev, and Sofia Clara; along with several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ann Durco; her husband, James; sister, Anna Durco; and son-in-law, David Mako; along with several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, and good friends.
Mary was born to John and Ann Durco on February 2, 1927, in East Chicago, IN. She lived most of her life in East Chicago and graduated in 1944 from Washington High School. She met James Mihalik and they got married on August 5, 1950 and shared 46 years together. She was a life-long parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in East Chicago. Mary worked at various jobs and places throughout her life, but specialized in the lost skill of using a comptometer. She retired from NIPSCO, where she made lasting friendships. Upon retirement, Mary enjoyed traveling, going to the boats, and dining out with friends and family. At home, she loved to read, do crossword puzzles, and catching up with everyone during long conversations. Mary will be dearly missed, and we were all fortunate to have had her in our lives as long as we did.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Mary's name to capstonehospice.com or to autismspeaks.org.
