It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Paris, age 84, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, respected businessman, friend, and cherished member of his community.
Doug passed away on October 16, 2026, the birthday of his beloved daughter Monica Paris, who preceded him in death ten years ago. This remarkable connection brings our family a great sense of comfort and peace, as we imagine father and daughter reunited again. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of our family.
A proud, self-made businessman, Doug owned and operated Paris Family Barbershop in Hessville, a neighborhood of Hammond, Indiana, for an extraordinary 63 years. He continued cutting hair until his declining health no longer allowed him to do what he loved. Through his determination, dedication, and unwavering work ethic, he built more than a successful business—he established a legacy in the community he proudly served.
For more than six decades, Doug was a familiar and respected face in Hessville. He had the remarkable privilege of cutting the hair of four generations of families, watching children grow into adults and eventually welcoming their children and grandchildren into his barber chair. His barbershop became much more than a place for a haircut. It was a neighborhood gathering place filled with conversation, laughter, friendships, and stories shared over the years.
Doug was admired by many of his customers, he was a trusted friend, a listening ear, and often a source of wisdom and advice. Whether someone came in for a simple haircut or needed a friendly conversation, Doug always made time to listen. His barber chair became a place where customers felt comfortable sharing their stories, seeking advice, and enjoying genuine conversation. His dedication to his craft, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his commitment to the Hessville community earned him tremendous respect. He wasn't simply the neighborhood barber; he was a part of the community's history. Barbering was more than a profession for Doug; it was a lifelong passion and a way of connecting with people.
In addition to his barbering career, He was also a successful businessman who owned and operated a gas station for 25 years. Whether behind the barber chair or running his gas station, he took great pride in everything he did. A true self-made man. His family, and many of his customers looked up to him, admiring his determination, independence, and the successful businesses he built through decades of hard work.
Doug was deeply dedicated to his business, but his true lifelong passion was duck and deer hunting. He found immense joy in the sport, whether he was waiting out early mornings in a duck blind or taking in the quiet beauty of the outdoors. An extraordinary marksman, he was still proving he was an exceptional shot well into his eighties. His pride and joy was the 120-acre hunting property he created in Leesburg, Indiana. The lodge was far more than a place to hunt; it stood as a testament to his hard work, determination, and sharp investment instincts. Above all, it was a sanctuary where he built unforgettable memories with dear friends and created a beautiful retreat for the family to share.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Paris. For 63 years he shared his life with her. They shared a life that stood as a true testament to love, devotion, and enduring strength. Together, they built a lifetime of beautiful memories, raised three daughters, and created a family deeply rooted in love and tradition. Through life’s joys, challenges, and heartbreaks, they remained steadfastly by each other’s side.
Doug loved his family and they loved him deeply. In the words of Doug's daughter, Jennell, "I know that everything he did was for us. His strength, determination, and values will forever shape the legacy he leaves behind. He meant the world to me, and I am grateful for his love and support he gave me throughout my life. He was a constant pillar for me and my children, always there whenever we needed him, offering his love without hesitation. While saying goodbye is heartbreaking, I find deep comfort in knowing that I was by his side until the very end, just as he had always been there for me. His final words were, "I love you too"—a gift I will cherish forever. His love will remain in my heart, and I will carry a part of him with me for the rest of my days. I will forever be proud and grateful to be his daughter."
Doug is survived by his daughters, Pamela Paris, Jennell Paris; and his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Paris, Madison Massie, Joyce Massie, Charles (Megan) Schwader, Katie Schwader, Shane Schwader, Dustin Swindle, and Hunter Houser.
He was also a proud and loving great-grandfather to Aubrey Schwader, Charleigh Schwader, William Cather, Aurora Schwader, Lux Arias, Anthony Ciriello, London Arias, Lola Arias, and Amelia Massie.
Doug's life was a testament to the American dream—a man who provided for his family, built something meaningful through his own hard work, dedication, and determination. His accomplishments were measured not only by the success of his businesses, but also by the generations of families he served, the friendships he cultivated, the love of his family, and the respect he earned throughout his community.
“A lifetime of hard work. Four generations of tradition. A legacy that will live on forever.”
