

Walter was born August 27, 1924 in Chicago Heights, Illinois to the late Samuel and Lilly (Hassell) Handley. Also preceding him in death are his son, Billy Joe Handley; brothers, Elmer, Buddy and Ernie Handley; sisters, Lila Bishop, Lucille Sams, and Evelyn Nichols.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 68 years, Violet (Waggle) Handley; children, Walter (Irene) Handley Jr., Ken (Lisa) Handley, Martin Handley; daughter-in-law, Shirley Handley; 24 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr.Handley honorably served in the United States Navy as a Sea Bee (Construction Battalion) for two years in the South Pacific during World War II. When he retired after 30 years as a millwright at US Steel Gary Works, he and his wife relocated in Lebanon, Missouri. He then retired from Detroit Tool as a tool and die maker. He was a loving and devoted family man, husband, father and grandfather.
Funeral services will be 11:30 am at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (8178 S. Cline Ave.; Schererville, Indiana 46375) with Rev. Doug Klukken officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. To leave online condolences, please visit www.chapelawnfunerals.com
