September 5, 2026
Our loving mother, Amalia (Gorda) Castro Suarez Monzon, went home to be with the Lord on September 5, 2026. Her life was rooted in faith, devoted to Christ, and guided by the teachings of the Bible. She walked with a steady trust in God, finding strength, comfort, and purpose in His word.
Amalia was born on January 9, 1946, in Villa Rica, Colombia, to Maria Suarez and Carlos Castro. She loved growing up in Colombia, surrounded by the beauty, culture, and memories of the place she first called home. In her early twenties, she went to work for the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, where she heard many stories from American visitors. Those stories inspired her dream of moving to the United States.
In 1971, with the help of her church, Amalia was able to move to New York. The following year, in 1972, she met the love of her life, Jose (Gordo) Lionel Monzon. Six months later, they were married, beginning a life together built on love, faith, and devotion.
Amalia and Jose were blessed with three children: Jose, Melanie, and Milton (Van). They built their family life in Middletown, New York, where they lived until 1991, when they moved to Dallas, Texas, beginning a new chapter together.
Amalia will always be remembered for her love of cooking. She showed her love through the meals she prepared, bringing comfort, joy, and togetherness to those gathered around her table. After her husband’s passing in 2000, she chose to travel as much as possible whenever she had the opportunity. She was always ready for the next adventure, embracing each journey with an open heart and grateful spirit.
Her life was made complete when she became a grandmother. Amalia was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren, who knew her lovingly as “Gorda” or “Ita.” Her grandchildren were her world, and she treasured every moment spent with them, filling their lives with love, warmth, and lasting memories.
Amalia will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the prayers she lifted faithfully, and the example she set for her family and all who knew her. She carried herself with kindness, humility, and grace, offering encouragement, wisdom, and compassion throughout her life.
Amalia is survived by her children, Jose (Kristen) Monzon, Melanie (Eugene) Jabbour, and Milton Van Monzon; her grandchildren, Adrianna Monzon, Preston Ghafar, Caitlin Jabbour, and Olivia Jabbour; and her siblings, Marlen, Carlos, Roosbeth, Melba, Elvira, Pilar, and Lorena.
She joins in eternal rest the love of her life, Jose Lionel Monzon; her parents, Maria and Carlos; and her siblings, Sofia, Ugo, and Gildardo.
As a mother, she was a blessing beyond measure. Her devotion to her family was matched by her devotion to the Lord, and her legacy will continue through the faith, love, and values she shared. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is at peace in the arms of her Savior.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall be the mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelations 21:4
May her memory be a lasting blessing, and may the hope of Christ bring peace to all who mourn her passing.
