Barbara was a proud life-long Dallas resident, born on March 22, 1943 to Kathleen Underwood Galt and Gordon Galt. She attended Bradfield Elementary, The Hockaday School and graduated from Highland Park High School class of 1961. Barbara graduated from Southern Methodist University with her B.A. in English.
As a child she enjoyed riding her horse, Quest, and loved spending summers at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama where she would play tennis and sail. Barbara loved music and while at Highland Park gave a memorable performance as Bloody Mary in the musical South Pacific.
After making her Idlewild debut, Bert and Barbara married in early 1966 and welcomed Michelle into the world later that year. Three years later Clayton Michael was born. Raising her children was her priority and greatest joy. She remained their biggest cheerleader and advocate throughout her life and instilled in them the confidence that they could do anything they set their minds to.
Barbara loved to have fun! The family spent winter vacations skiing in Vail and summers in favorite spots like Kailua, Hawaii, but the place closest to her and the family’s heart was Bert’s old family bay house on Galveston Bay. It was here that the whole family’s love of boating grew. She and Bert raced sailboats locally and in major off-shore series and regattas. In 1986 she spear-headed fundraising for the America II campaign to reclaim the America’s Cup from Australia. Barbara’s other passion was fast red cars such as her much coveted ’67 Corvette and first of the line 300 ZX convertible.
Although divorced for many years, Barbara and Bert remained close and in 2006 welcomed into the world their grandson, Nicholas, born to Clayton Michael and his wife, Cheryl. He instantly became the light of her life.
In her later years renal failure and dialysis slowed her down a bit physically, but not the contagious laughter. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Meadows; son, Clayton Meadows; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Meadows and cherished grandson, Nicholas Meadows; her ex-husband and close friend, Bert Meadows; cousins, Betty Underwood and Carol Underwood Dicker Ochse; niece and nephew, Kathy Hall Murphy and Brandon Hall; her many friends, some lifelong, and all of those that called her “mom” that she loved and adored. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Allison Galt Hall;
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 2:30 pm at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, Texas, 75205.
