My mom was never an affectionate type of person. She was not one to tell us that she loved us or shower us with kisses. However, the way she showed her love was through food. Anytime I went home from college she would always cook my favorite dishes. 

When Alex and I became homeowners, she would always give me a cooler full of her cooked food to bring back to San Antonio.

Anytime she gave us food to eat, she was telling us she loved us. And anytime we ate it we were telling her we loved her.  

As she grew older, she started to lose her taste buds little by little. But still, I would always emphasize to her how good it was because I knew it would brighten her day.

As I reflect back, I notice it was the little gestures that mattered.

Part 2: 

Our Mom always had the biggest smile. I know mom is looking down on us from above and protecting us.

 Mom you left us too soon. We planned to do so much more with you this year. We were supposed to celebrate your 70th birthday. But at the same time, we know you had an incredible time this year. Mom, you went on quite the adventure this summer. 

First, you visited Florida for months to see all the relatives and then you went with Su Co to California for an additional two months. Mom was so happy at Tiffany and Alex’s wedding, knowing that her baby girl is married and in good hands with her new son-in-law. Ma da man nguyen va hanh phuc khi duoc gap ta ca ba con noi ngoai.

 Mom loved to garden. When mom visited me over this summer, we built a vegetable garden together. Everytime we spoke on phone, the first thing mom asked me was “Con an chua? Con nho tuoi rau cho Ma.” “Mom, don’t worry I will water your vegetable garden and keep it fresh and green.” From now on when I am
 down or miss you, I will sit and admire the garden that we built together. This vegetable garden will forever be a part of me for remembrance of you.

This room is filled with so many people that knew and cared for my mom and for that I am very grateful. I know my mom would have loved to see all of the beautiful flowers, tremendous love, and support here today for her and for us.

Everyone, thank you for taking the time to make it here to our mother’s funeral, it means so much to us.

Mom, without you I would not be the person I am today. You had an unconditional love for all eight of your kids and that was obvious through your actions, your resilient work ethic, your big heart, and the strong family structure that you have built and left behind with us. For everyone here, here are a few examples of how our mother instilled her qualities into us.

 When we lived in Denver, mom would take me to the parks in our neighborhood dumpster to find cans to sell. We would not go home until we had filled at least two big black bags.

When we lived in Hawaii, mom would wake me up at 4 in the morning and go to the auction at dockside Pier 38 to buy a 300 pound Ahi Ahi. Afterwards, we would go home and fillet the fish. Once prepared, we would go from neighbor to neighbor to knock and pitch a sale saying “Ahi Ahi $5 per pound, you want to buy?”. Once in a blue moon, we would have a neighbor buy all of our stock in preparation for a party.

When we moved to the mainland in 1996, Mom would sit with me for hours to learn how to lay acrylic nails. Eventually, this lead to our family buying our first
 salon in Jacksonville Florida and that where it all started. Where we finally started to settle in our roots.

Part 2: 

You never ceased to shower us with love through your cooking.

You were an amazing cook and I wish I learned more from you. I love how you made something so simple, like cooking eggs, into a recipe that none of us could ever recreate. 

I'm going to miss your runny eggs.

It always brought a smile to my face when you and Grandma Ly would watch YouTube videos together to learn and cook new recipes. Even though, I always told you that your original recipe was better.

You were the kindest woman I have ever known. I could travel around the world and back and not hear one negative word spoken in your name. All the people in this room is proof of it.

Im going to miss taking you shopping and to your weekly doctor appointments because that was our time together.

You have been sick for so long that it became the norm and I forgot to look up and realize how weak you were getting.

Im going to miss our talks on my way to work. I’m going to miss venting to you about work. But, what I am going to miss the most is when you ask me if I had ate yet.

You leave behind 8 strong willed, hard working, and resilient children that know the importance created of family. 
We will be forever be  blessed to have you as our mom.

And for that, we truly thank you.

Ma, you can now join Dad for your daily morning tea and rest assure that we will be okay. We love you mom.

Part 1: 

To my wonderful mother, my heart is aching..

 I’m still in disbelief that you’re gone. You were taken away too soon. I would give up everything just to spent one more day with you.

These past few days I've rewritten this speech for you countless times trying to find the right words to thank you.

For being such an amazing mother, I could never write or say enough words to show you my gratitude.

You may have been a woman of few words, but your actions spoke louder than any words could have. 
You have been there for every important moment of my life from every graduation, my first real job, to my own experiences with motherhood. I pray that I become half the mother that you were.

You did everything for your children; you moved mountains just to put a smile on our face.

I would do anything now just to see your beautiful smile one more time.

You were the hardest working woman I have ever known. From going door to door selling fish in Hawaii, to working long hours in the nail salon, you somehow still had the energy to come home every night to cook us hot meals for dinner.

My mom often had to split her time between her eight children. My fondest memories with my mom were when she would brush my hair and tie my hair back. Her hands were soft and gentle as she gathered my hair and tied it up. As she would brush my hair, she ask how my day was, what I learned in school, and if I was “good” today by listening to my older siblings and caring for my younger ones.  I felt so loved and cared for.

She would do this for me even when she didn’t like my hair. I went through a red/orange highlight phase and she made sure to let me know she was disappointed in my choice of color. She would tease me and said my hair looks like a roosters tail.

My mom would often do this for me even as an adult when I’d come back home. I would sit in front her with a brush and she knew exactly what I wanted. These are one of the many memories that I cherish of my mom.

I miss and love you Ma.
