Charles Herdemian Jr. 79, of Richardson, Texas, passed away on December 28th. He passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love and support of his second wife Fe De Guzman, remarried February 10, 2019. Charles was born on Pearsall Ave in the Bronx, NY to Charles Herdemian Sr. and Grace Serian Herdemian. He grew up with 4 younger brothers, Robert, Anthony, Paul and Edward Herdemian. He attended Stuyvesant High School and Hunter College before obtaining his accounting degree through Iona at the Orangeburg, NY annex campus. Charles was able to master his future craft in mathematics and become a pioneer to alternative approaches in the classrooms . Later he went on to work 30 + years as a teacher at PS 101 in the Bronx, leading Specialized Math Classes and Programs, as well as being an intrical part of the afterschool programs for inner city youths, mainly sixth grade. "Mr. Herdemian" was one of the most respected names in the school's hallways, by teachers and students alike. Every single year he would take a select bunch of students who achieved the highest recognitions during the school year for good behavior and outstanding efforts in the classroom, for a field trip. A specialized excursion where he would take the kids to various destinations, and ultimately found the perfect one for the final years of his rewards, his very own home.
Charles' primary focus in life was bringing out the best in others, while extending himself to ensure that everyone he held dear never wanted for a thing. If something was needed, he was the first to lend a helping hand. He was an ideal big brother, an inspirational role model, a dedicated husband and a father figure to many. He was a true CITY boy who found the greatest personal joy in CTY, Coffee, Trains and Yankees, the latter being the true focal point of his life! Bleeding the blue and grey pinstripes, he was always present for every Yankee game, whether in person on one of his many excursions, or in front of the tv on the couch. He may not have been awake for all of the games, but somehow, someway, he always managed to wake up for the end! He said he wore his religion around his neck, and you could bet your last dollar, his necklace wasn't a cross, it was a Yankee emblem. His love for those Yankees was unconditional, but it was nothing in comparison to the love he had for his family and closest friends.
Charles married Ileen Willer Herdemian on August 19, 1973 and he brought three children into this world, Stuart, Allan and Rachel Herdemian. Charles is survived by his middle son Allan, and his almost son, who just might have been his favorite, Mariano, his dog. As a father, and a man, there was little lacking, as Charles committed all of his time to working as a teacher to support his family, working on his "off" time as a craftsman jeweler from home to account for his growing family, and even after retirement, worked three jobs at one point when his first wife was laid off. Charles was there for all of his children's events, both academic and athletic, and somehow managed to find the time to play on a softball team well into his 50s. Charles was a math specialist as he called it, but to most, he was a math magician, somehow finding a way to make time itself, multiply exponentially. Charles was a handyman around the house, a chauffeur to everyone who asked, and the very best person to have on your trivial pursuit team, as he knew everything about everything that nobody cared about, as he said. Charles found joy in life, and always found the positives in any situation, conversation, or person he encountered.
A small funeral service will be held at King David Cemetery on January 20, 2025 at 9 a.m. in Las Vegas, Nevada. His family will be present to welcome loved ones. He will be buried with his first wife Ileen and his eldest son Stuart. There will be a Celebration of Life in New York on or around February 16th, official date and time to be determined.
