Stephen Craig “The Wonderful One” Maurer passed away on January 4, 2026. He was born on August 18, 1951, to Darwin and Marjorie Maurer in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1969 and went on to graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1973. He was a member of NAVY ROTC during his years at OU. He honorably served four years following graduation as a Supply Officer in the United States Navy, and he was a Vietnam veteran.
Following his time in the Navy, he served as a District Manager for Ryder Truck Rental for 20 years. He then served as President/Owner of Dallas Service Center, Inc. for 20 years and built a thriving business. He retired in 2017 following a successful sale of the business. For 10 of these years, he was accompanied to work by “The Duke of DSC,” an English bulldog who demanded daily rides on the golf cart and enjoyed chewing parts and other items in the inventory.
He was married to Patricia Kathleen “Kathy” Taylor for 51 years. They were married the day before they departed for NYC to begin his service in the Navy. They relocated many times for Craig’s job at Ryder, and it was always a great learning experience. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their two children, Stephanie Christine, and her husband Jason Heideman and their four children: Kaitlyn, Austin, Ally and Emma, and Scott Maurer and his wife Catherine. He is also survived by his brother Bryan Maurer and wife Marcia. Craig is predeceased by his parents and his sister Susan and her husband Jim Dixon.
Craig is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Dr. Malcolm Taylor and his wife Peggy and Dr. John R. Taylor and his wife Erica. He also has 13 nieces and nephews and 26 great nieces and nephews. He is a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas.
Craig was kind and generous to everyone he encountered. His family recalls all the times he stopped to chat with a stranger while out running errands, often sharing an encouraging word, story, or an unexpected tip.
Kathy and Craig enjoyed retirement immensely and were able to do a lot of traveling together. Craig was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the golf courses of Texas. He was never happier than sitting on the balcony in the Bahamas, staring out at the ocean and drinking coffee with his best friend, Kathy. Craig made the world a better place.
Per Craig’s request, services will not be held at this time. To honor his legacy, we encourage you to go into your community and perform acts of random kindness. We know that would make him smile.
