Doris Elaine Balvin, age 84, of Plano, TX passed away peacefully on January 11th. She was born in Haverhill, Iowa on March 6, 1927 in the home of her parents, Adelbert and Sophia Blaschke Jansen. Doris graduated from St. Joseph’s Grade School in Haverhill, and St Mary’s High School in Marshalltown in 1944. She was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill. She was employed by Forrest C. Reed Insurance Agency until her marriage to Donald Balvin on May 14, 1949.
After their marriage, the Balvins lived in Des Moines where Doris was employed by Maryland Casualty Insurance Company. In 1972 the couple moved to Marshalltown, Iowa when Don took a position with Lennox Industries in their corporate offices. There Doris continued her career in the insurance business with a position with Brennecke/Grossman Insurance until they moved to Texas in 1978.
Doris was actively involved in her parish, St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plano, Texas where she worked in the high school CCD program as Secretary for 8 years. She and her husband Don volunteered in the parish in a number of capacities. Doris is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald, and her three sons, Gregory of Boulder, Colorado, Edward of Richardson, Texas and Michael of Plano, Texas. Also surviving are her brother, Donald and his wife Hazel of Marshalltown, her sister Joan Miller and her husband Gordon of Mesa, Arizona, and her sister Alice Nicholson of Marshalltown, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Tuesday January 17th at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plano, TX. A reception will follow at the parish hall. Visitation will be Monday evening, January 16th from 6 until 9pm at the Ted Dickey West funeral home with Deacon Ed Putonti conducting a wake service at 7pm. Doris will be laid to rest at noon on the 20th of January at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa. Friends and family in Iowa are asked to gather at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home at 10:30AM on Friday.
