Elfriede Maria Douglas

Born on June 4, 1933, in Waldneukirchen, Austria, Friede was one of 14 children of Franz and Maria Loerschenkohl. Growing up during the height of World War II, she endured hardships most of us can hardly imagine, yet she carried herself with resilience and strength. She was the last surviving child of her family, a reflection of the grit and determination that defined her life.

Her life changed forever when she met U.S. Army serviceman James Delo Douglas, who was managing an NCO club while stationed in Germany. From the very beginning, they knew they had found the love of their lives. Their marriage was rooted in loyalty, laughter, and devotion. Determined to embrace her new life, Friede even taught herself English by watching American soap operas, a perfect example of her determination and spirit.

Friede was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James. She is survived by her three sons Thomas James, Ronald Rene, and Raymond Lee Douglas, as well as her stepdaughter Adonna Lea Douglas. She was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.

A talented gardener, skilled cook/baker, and devoted crocheter, Friede was happiest when caring for others. Anyone who ever visited her home knew her warmth and selflessness. She was famous for always asking if guests were hungry, and if you said no the first time, she would ask again just to be sure. That was who she was: a nurturer, a caretaker, and someone who made everyone feel welcome.

A celebration of Friede’s life will be held on Monday, September 15, at 11:30 a.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery (see details below). The service will be casual in spirit, as family and friends gather to share their favorite memories and stories of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DAV.org, a cause close to both her and James’s heart.

Friede will be deeply missed, but her love, laughter, and generosity will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her. We take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with James, the love of her life.
