Dear Laurel and Family, I have thought of you all many times this year. I know it has been hard for each of you. Dr. Purdue meant so much to so many people. Although I no longer work in the unit I keep in touch and always hear that  it is just not the same anymore. I feel I worked during the best times because everyone felt that we were a team. All the new people there really missed out on what us old ones had. Dr. Purdue helped to make the burn unit special. Not only for me but for everyone. Dear Laurel - I don't know if you remember me. I was working in the Burn Unit at Parkland when you and Gary first moved to Dallas. I moved to PA a year or so later to start the Burn Unit at Geisinger Medical Center. We met for lunch on one of your trips up north. I have thought of you so often over the years and just today googled Gary and read the heartbreaking news, almost a year ago already. He was such a good friend to me and you were both just wonderful people. Please know that I will keep you in my prayers. God bless you.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Purdue for eight years as Parkland's Burn Unit Social Worker.  We shared many highs (the beginning stages of Burn Camp) and lows (death of patients; giving bad news to families).  His compassion and concern for patients, families and staff was unmatched and evident to all.

He supported and encouraged my meager research efforts, including consoling me over that red ink-filled paper I got back from Dr. Hunt!

I know the work of the Burn Unit will go on, but the void he left there will never be filled the same way again.

Thank you for sharing him with us -- and letting us share in Saturday's meaningful tribute to him.

Gary was not only a great physician, but a better man.

Gary and Laurel Purdue touched my life by "adopting my mother and father" Mary and John Hornburg, when my older brother Hal was in the first gulf war and I was assigned elsewhere in the Air Force.

They called on them regularly and aided them greatly.  I will always remember that.

What an amazing loss this world has suffered.  Having made many friends and met many physicians and teachers over the years, very few have stood out like Dr. Purdue.  As a physician he was not only extremely talented but also unbelievably compassionate.  As a teacher he commanded respect with a gentle hand instead of an iron fist.  As a friend he was always there for you.  He was the ultimate triple threat.

The dedication to his residents extended far beyond the walls of Parkland hospital.  Often he and Laurel would have us over for a home cooked meal and an afternoon of fun, graciously opening their house to us so that we may experience the comforts and joys of home despite having no family around.  They treated us as their own.

As a father, he was the perfect role model.  He took pleasure in the little things; often talking about how he enjoyed tinkering on cars with his sons, for example.  He was very proud of his children’s accomplishments, both personal and professional.  His priorities were straight.  With Laurel by his side, he has left an indelible mark on this world.

Tricia and I can only imagine what his family is going through but let it be known that through his many friends he very much remains with us.  He is a wonderful soul and will be greatly missed.  He and his family are in our prayers and we are honored to have been a part of Dr. Purdue’s wonderful life.

I loved Dr. Purdue so much! He reminded me of a father. I work as an occupational therapist at UT in the outpatient rehab department. I always looked forward to seeing him. I would direct him straight to the food when he entered the clinic. I loved seeing pictures of the babies and talking about his family. What a blessing he was to me. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to attend the memorial service. The holy spirit filled the room and it was evident Dr. Purdue loved the Lord. How inspiring it was for me to hear all the wonderful ways he helped guide his young family in the ways of the Lord. I am more encouraged today to be a better parent and better child of God. This time is difficult, but God has a purpose and reason for everything. We don't really understand now, but I am hoping lives and hearts have been changed since his passing. God is amazing and I believe miraculous things still occur today. Today Dr. Purdue is even more special to me as I have heard the numerous ways he loved and obeyed the Lord. Thank you Lord for making and molding such a wonderful man. Thank you for allowing his heart to be like you. He will hold a special place in my heart. I continue to lift up the entire Purdue family, including the two sweet little babies that will soon be proudly named Purdue!

I was fortunate to see Dr. Purdue the Saturday before his untimely passing as a Nursing student having my first day at the SICU. What a nice guy he was. He made me feel welcome and treated me like an equal. Am happy he knew his God for He alone knows best. I pray for the family and pray the goodness and mercies of God protect and see them through this difficult time.

Dr. Purdue saved my life.  He also did my last surgery this past August.  I was anxious about it but when he came into the pre-op room to see me, all my fears were vanquished.  He will live forever in my heart and the hearts of many.  I feel honored that my last scar was by his hand.  He is a true hero and it is so sad that he is no longer with us.  I wish you peace at this most difficult time.  Thank you for allowing the memorial yesterday.  It must have been hard to publicly grieve and your selflessness is a testament to Dr. Purdue; a Giant among us.

To the entire Purdue Family...our hearts were deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Purdue's tragic accident and passing on last Sunday.  We met him 2 years ago after my uncle suffered burns on his job.  Dr. Purdue,had a very meek, kind, and humble spirit and I could tell that he was a man that knew the Lord and had a passion about the burn victims.  He looked at my mother and told her that" you are going to have to stop working because you will have to take care of him now," thinking that my mother was the wife, and she told him that she was his sister.  Dr. Purdue will be greatly missed down here on earth, but heaven has gained a saint.  Mrs. Purdue, trust in the Lord and lean not to thine own understanding and to the children-I have sat where you were today, it's not going to be easy, but trust in the Lord as well. There aren't words to express how much we appreciated Dr. Purdue.  He was a great blessing in our lives as well as many others when we needed it most. He helped save my sons life last year when he was burned 85% of his body. He always had a smile for us and was genuine in his concern for us as well as my son. He will never be forgotten. While I had not seen all of you in a few years, memories take me back to when you first moved to Dallas and we were your neighbors right behind you in North Dallas. As our friendship grew we learned of the huge heart and incredible talent that Gary possessed along with the generous heart of you and your entire family with the loving care of your foster children. To have done so much good for so many and to be taken much too early in life.

My daughter, Meredith, is alive because of the talent and skill of Dr. Purdue. I made it through her recovery because of the humanity and compassion of Dr. Purdue. It is sad that others will be deprived of his skill and heart.

On behalf of Ms.Lillie and the Smith family we would like to express our heartfelt condolences and gratitude to Dr. Gary Purdue's family.  Thank you for allowing us to be apart of your wonderful family. For many years my mother-in-law, Ms. Lillie made sure that Dr. Purdue had his Thursday Special: Old-fashion Bologna Sandwich, Lays, Coke and a Twinkie and for the Holidays Strawberry Bundt Cake.  I enjoyed every trip she and i made together on Wednesdays to prepare for Thursdays.

I would also like to thank God for the knowledge He had given Dr. Purdue to touch and save so many lives.  I will never forget when he asked me if i believe in God when my husband, William Smith had his motorcycle accident and things were not looking good for him and i told Dr. Purdue, I did believe in God and he said, "I will assure you that we will not lose William."  At that very moment I knew that all was well.  

So I say to Mrs. Purdue and Family, he will be missed but never forgotten.  Your family will forever be in our prayers.

I was so sad to read of Dr. Purdue's death.  I had the opportunity to do a rotation in the burn unit with Dr. Purdue as a medical student.  He was a consummate gentleman and a wonderful teacher.  Your whole family will be in my prayers.

Laurel, Heather, Ian, Keith, and Kyle...I have no words to describe the emotions I feel right now. I keep reading about what a great doctor Gary was, but I did not know him as a doctor. I knew him as a neighbor, friend, and father. If he was anything like he was as a Dad, then he must have been a tremendous doctor. What a tragic, senseless loss. I am praying for healing for your family. God has just welcomed an invaluable man into his kingdom.

Dr. Purdue was a wonderful and caring man, a dedicated surgeon, and a proud American veteran.  The world will miss him, but heaven is rejoicing to have him home!

My husband, Juan Infante was admitted into the Parkland Burn ICU in 7/96. Even though he was not a burn victim, the previous hospital had the insight to know that Parkland was the only place that could save him.  Juan had a unique set of issues (strep, staph, flesh eating virus, and MRSA (before they knew what MRSA was).  Dr. Purdue and his staff refused to let him die.  The next 3 weeks were a roller coaster of new problems every day but Dr. Purdue and his staff were relentless and Juan survived.  We are just one of hundreds or thousands of families that Dr. Purdue touched.  Thank you for sharing him with us.

I have had two families in my life, one biological and the other made up of people from the Burn Unit at Parkland Hospital. This family has many members in it. We care about each other and over the years depend  on one anothers strenghts. Now we will just have to take turns holding on to each other to keep going.Weren't we all blessed to have had such a good , caring , down to earth Burn Family member . I know Dr. Purdue and his wife Laurel reached out  to do as much good as they could in this world and that together they raised  their children by example. Dr. Purdue will live on in spirit always. Words cannot express our  saddness of this news.  Dr Purdue was a giant among men, yet he was kind and warm hearted.  He could make you feel you were the most important person during a visit with him.  His smiling face radiated his love of life and people. What a great one we have lost..... Dr. Purdue taught me and so many others so much about surgery, but we also learned volumes about how to live a life well, with purpose and meaning. It would be an understatement to say that the national Burn and Trauma communities are stunned by the Gary's passing. 
At the American College of Surgeons meeting this week he was repeatedly publicly and privately mourned. He was remembered not only for his surgical contributions but mostly for his humanism, his kindness, his thoughtfulness and his sense of humor. He was an exemplary leader and we will miss him. I was so sorry to hear about the loss of Dr. Purdue. My son was at Parkland for a month when he was severely burned twelve years ago. Dr. Purdue was the kindest man...and he has touched so many peoples' lives...I feel blessed to have met him and for him playing such a huge part in saving my son's life.
