Hugh “John” Jones was born July 23, 1964 in Spanish Town, Jamaica. The second of three children born to Dr. Hezekiah and Yvonne Jones, Hugh passed away on June 2, 2020, in Richardson, Texas, after a long illness.
When Hugh was nine years old, he moved with his family to Urbana, Illinois, and at 13, moved to Huntsville, Alabama. It should be noted that Hugh always loved Jamaica, but was very proud of his American citizenship.
As a child, Hugh was a paperboy who delivered newspapers in the married student apartments in Urbana. Although he liked the job, he didn’t like going door-to-door to collect payment for the subscription.
Hugh graduated from S.R Butler High School in Huntsville in 1982. In 1990, Hugh earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Alabama A&M University. After college, he worked as a mortgage broker providing home mortgage loans to families for more than 20 years.
In 1985, Hugh wed Norma Jean Thompson. That union was blessed with three sons – Hugh, Jr., Brandon, and Taylor.
Hugh was a very loving family man. Most family members knew Hugh as “John,” but his sister called him Hugh-si-phi. He was also called Baby Hughie and sometimes referred to himself as Dancing Bear. He was devoted to his wife, Norma, until her passing in 2015 He was also fiercely protective of his family, especially his siblings. His eyes lit up when he was happy, especially when he spent time with his grandchildren.
John had the biggest heart and was blessed to find love again with his fiancée, Salena Ferrell, with whom he loved to watch crime shows and “assist” with solving the cases before the shows ended.
He adored his dogs, Shorty and Cooper, and would often sit with them in his favorite brown leather chair under blankets watching some of his favorite TV shows like Mom, Big Bang Theory, Will and Grace, 2½ Men or watching movies such as The 10 Commandments, Terminator, Top Gun, or Bourne Identity.
He loved life and dreamed of a life on a lake/beach sailing on his fancy dream boat. He was a long-time fan of sports and enjoyed watching Alabama Crimson Tide football and Chicago Cubs baseball.
John was a foodie and also quite the cook. He prided himself on his chicken and dumplings (known as spinners) for his family and friends. He also enjoyed Salena’s cubed steak and gravy, with long grain wild rice and green butter beans. Some of his other favorite meals were brown stew red-snapper with rice and peas gravy, with long grain wild rice and eggs benedict. And, of course, he also enjoyed Jamaican Hard-dough bread with fried dumpling with ackee and saltfish.
John rests in heaven with Norma, his son Brandon, his brother Richard and his grandparents.
To celebrate his life, he leaves his parents, Dr. Hezekiah S. Jones and Yvonne Jones; two sons, Hugh “John” Jr. and Taylor Jones; his sister, Camille Jones Bryant (Curtis); four grandchildren, Vanna-Claire, Crew, Cameron, and Roman; his fiancée Salena; extended family and close friends.
John lived by his motto, “Trust and Believe”.
