Our beloved mother, Joan Elizabeth Webb Cowdrey, passed away on April 1. She was 95 years old and lived at Highland Springs Retirement Community in Dallas, Texas. Joan was born in Mt. Gilead, Ohio on October 22, 1929 and attended high school in Circleville, Ohio. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with her teaching degree and started her lifelong love for teaching and learning. She met her husband, Leslie Maurice Cowdrey (Maury) at Ohio Wesleyan and they married in December 1951, beginning their adventurous 57 year marriage. Maury had a long career with Eastman Kodak Company, taking them to Rochester, NY, Fullerton, CA, London, England and eventually Dallas. They loved entertaining, travelling, antiquing and exploring life together.
We were blessed with a Mom who was caring and kind to everyone. Those who knew her, knew her sweet heart. Those who knew her, knew they could talk to her and feel heard, supported and encouraged, whether she agreed with you or not. She will be missed, but Heaven just welcomed a wonderful new resident.
Mom was a passionate animal lover. Her first dog, Becky, began the parade of the many animals in her life, including dogs, cats, birds, turtles and reptiles. In the past few years, families of mourning doves have made their nests on her patio. Even her last few days at Highland Springs, mom was able to meet and watch the doves create this year’s nest. Springtime, with the trees blooming and the birds arriving, gave her so much joy.
She also loved beauty. Mom created many beautiful and award winning quilts, loved being part of the Quilters Guild of Dallas and its sewing groups. Mom maintained her quilting right up until her last days, even if it was just one stitch a day.
Joan is survived by her three children, who were with her in her final days, Diane Cowdrey (Scot), David Cowdrey (Allison) and Christine Flowers (Bob) and her delightful grandchildren Cory, Emma, Katie and Cameron. Mom loved her grandchildren and enjoyed talking with them about their lives and about books, music and travel. She is also survived by her niece Deborah Svenson (Wayne), nephew Christopher Webb, and family members in the Webb and Warmington family lines.
Mom touched the lives of so many people throughout her life, including her friends at Highland Springs. Her quick wit and kookiness were always a joy to be around. We appreciate the love and support she received from all of you. She cherished her friendships and her family.
Please share a memory of Joan or express your condolences to our family below. In lieu of flowers, mom would be honored if you contributed to a charity of your choice or perhaps read a good book.
