Joe graduated from Calhoun High School, attended Victoria College, and served in the United States Army. He served in the military from October 24, 1945 through September 30, 1948. While on active duty, he served proudly and honorably as a Medical Technician 409, earning WWII Victory Medal and Occupation Ribbon (Korea). Instrumental in community involvement in Port Lavaca, Texas, Joe was the founder of the Port Lavaca LULAC council (League of United Latin American Citizens), and a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council 3253 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. He worked for the United States Post Office in Port Lavaca, Texas, and transferred to the U.S. Post Office in Plano, Texas. A dedicated postal worker, he retired after 33 years. After retirement Joe wanted to continue an active life and became a security officer.
Joe was a loving father with a generous heart who unselfishly sacrificed for his family, maintained steadfast faith and gave unconditional love. He raised his family upon the belief that “a family that prays together stays together,” and to always be thankful regardless of circumstances. Known as “Popo” by his pride and joy were his grandchildren and his great grandchildren whom he said always brought a smile to his face. Joe impacted the lives of those he touched and will forever be remembered. He will truly be missed.
Joe is preceded in death by his father Antonio Herrera, his mother Bernardina Islas Rendon, his sister Mary Caroline Herrera, his son-in-law Daniel Covarrubias, and we shall not forget his furry companion, “Mimi.”
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Delia Gonzales Herrera, his brother Frank Garza, his son Joseph Anthony Herrera and wife Julie, and his daughters, Zoila Krusemark and husband Steve, Cindy Covarrubias, and Sylvia Herrera.
