He was born on February 13, 1944, and grew up in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Adamson High School in 1962, and married Sue McCaffity in October 1962. They were happily married 46 years, until her passing in March 2009. Joe often said that lightning struck twice, because he found the 2nd love of his life a year later. In March 2010, Joe married Jean Patterson. They were also happily married until his death.
Joe was a self-made man. From humble beginnings growing up in Oak Cliff, his work ethic was unparalleled, as he worked in every facet of the advertising industry, doing everything from typesetting to printing, and even owning his own art/advertising company with his best friend Jerry Millican. While Joe was successful in the Art/Advertising industry for more than 40 years, his greatest accomplishments were as a husband and father. He was deeply committed to family - he was a loyal husband, father and friend. He was also a committed follower of Jesus, and faithfully attended Prestonwood Baptist Church. He was a music lover, and loved genres ranging from Elvis to Merle Haggard, from the Gaithers to Willie Nelson and everything in-between. He even had season tickets to the Dallas Symphony for many years. In fact, his love of music inspired both of his kids become professional musicians. But he was also an overgrown kid. He loved toys, as evidenced by a massive collection of die-cast cars, model trains, and an assortment of adult Legos. He spent hours building intricate Lego replicas of buildings, cars and robots. He was also an avid reader with an extensive library. He loved to travel. Many of his books were travel-related and photography.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Sue; mother, Letha; father, A.C. and stepfather R.T. Burris; and sisters Fran, Louise, and Doris. He is survived by his wife, Jean Johnson, his daughter Kim (Alan) Clark, and granddaughters Christina, Anastasia and Natasha; son, Greg (Yvonne) Johnson, and granddaughters, Allie (Michael) Rush; Katie (Dee) Walker-Adams; and Abbie Johnson; as well as great-granddaughters, Aubrielle and Brooklynn Walker-Adams, and great-grandson, M.J. Rush, and his wife Jean's daughters, Debra (Brad) Conrad; Lorie (Charlie) Brister and grandson Cole.
