John grew up in Illinois and graduated from Villa Grove High School. He went on to attend Illinois Wesleyan University, earning a degree in Physics in 1957, and later completed a Master’s degree in Physics at Northwestern University. He spent most of his working life as an electrical engineer with Texas Instruments, with assignments that took him to Richardson, Sherman, and Houston.
John married Margaret “Peg” Hopp in 1959. In 1964, they moved from Northern Illinois to Richardson, Texas, with their two young children, John Robert and Janet. A few years later, the family settled in Sherman, where their third child, William “Bill”, was born. In 1974, they moved once more to Houston.
After Peg’s passing in 1979, John married Carolyn Wheeler in 1982, becoming stepfather to her two children, Leigh and Coy. The family moved back to Sherman the following year. In 1992, John and Carolyn moved overseas and spent three years in Tokyo—an especially meaningful and memorable chapter in their lives. They returned to Dallas in 1995, where John retired from Texas Instruments.
Following his career at TI, John served as President of Operations for Twinstar Semiconductor and later took on advisory roles with Singapore-based Chartered Semiconductor. He was also active with Richardson-based StarTech Early Ventures, an incubator supporting emerging technology companies.
John was a man of deep faith and conviction, and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. His faith led him to serve in several lay leadership roles throughout his life. John and Carolyn were members of First United Methodist Church of Richardson, where they attended the Pathfinders class.
Carolyn also preceded him in death. John is survived by his children: John (Cassie) Wiley, Janet (Bob) Adams, Bill (Julie) Wiley, Leigh (Jim) Walker, and Coy (Nancy) Wheeler; his grandchildren: Kristen (Ben) James, Drew (Vivian) Wiley, Sarah Walker, Hannah Walker, Jake Adams, Tom Adams, Tyler Wiley, Margaret Wiley, and Toby Wheeler; his great-grandsons: Barrett James, Landon James, and Owen Wiley; and several nieces and nephews.
