Joseph Edward Rebic passed away peacefully on February 11, 2020, at the T. Boone Pickens Faith Presbyterian Hospice Center, Dallas, Texas. He was 95-years-old. Last year when a terminal illness was diagnosed Joe said, “I’m surprised I’ve lived this long!” At that time, Joe, a lifelong Catholic, received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. He recalled then, “Every day I wake up, it’s a good day. When God says it’s time, hasta la vista!” Joe lived another 7 months and received the Sacrament of Last Rites prior to his passing.
Joe was most proud of his family, being a US Merchant Marine WWII veteran, and a retired banker from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Until very recently, he took monthly casino trips with friends and enjoyed watching sports (especially football). His favorite weekday event was lunch and socializing with his dear friends in the senior program at the Jewish Community Center of Dallas where he was a member for many years. He often remarked, “There’s always something to do there. I love the people,
therapy dogs, and the matzo ball soup, too.” Joe always had a ready smile and was delighted to spend time with every person and canine he met.
Since March 2018, Joe lived in a senior independent living community and was friends with residents and staff alike. He enjoyed his “bachelor apartment” and especially liked reading and sharing his morning newspaper subscription with others, happy hour activities, and theme dinner parties. Joe loved a good time and every day was one for him.
Joe is survived by his family: Leeanne & Gary A. Hay (daughter and son-in-law), Gillian Salerno-Rebic, Eric D. Hay, and Charlotte O’Connor (beloved grandchildren), Penny & Jack Oberly (sister and brother-in-law), and Rudy Rebish (brother), along with many, many nieces and nephews, and great-niblings, too.
Joe’s wife of 50 years, Anne, predeceased him in 2002 and grandson, Jason Hay, in 2019.
A committal service with military honors will be held at DFW National Cemetery, Monday March 2, 2020 beginning promptly at 2:30pm. A reception will follow at 4:30pm the Jewish Community Center of Dallas, 7900 Northaven Road, Dallas, Texas 75230.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Joseph Rebic Senior Program Scholarship Fund c/o the Jewish Community Center of Dallas, 7900 Northaven Road, Dallas, Texas 75230. The fund will provide membership fee assistance to any senior in need so that like Joe, of blessed memory, others can enjoy each day as he did.
