Homemaker, artist and former Special Education teacher’s aide Joyce Stoops’ story doesn’t end with her death, but instead will continue on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joyce Stoops, born July 9th, 1942 passed away on June 24th, 2022. She was a caring, thoughtful, Christian who showed her beauty through art, whether it is how she decorated her surroundings or in the relationships she maintained.
Joyce was born in Covington, Kentucky and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. After getting married, she moved to Southern California to raise her children. There are fond memories of her taking us out of school to play in the mountains when a fresh coat of snow blew through or heading to the beach on a hot summer day to splash in the waves. From California, she moved to Iowa for almost a decade where she made many friends and began her days of decorating homes. From Iowa she moved to North Texas where she finished her days.
Joyce will be remembered by those who knew her as a very giving and loving person. She enjoyed family vacations and was always open to adventure. One of her fondest memories was of a trip exploring the Amazon River while in her 60’s. She loved the water and enjoyed helping to form the Special Olympics program in Plano, TX where she volunteered as a swim coach.
Her grandchildren remember her from the artwork that she created every time they visited, whether it was painting a new wall in the house, garage sale shopping for new décor, or drawing and painting everyday objects found around her.
Joyce is survived by her children Christine and husband Stan Hermann; Steven; Peter and wife Emmelyn; and Matthew and wife Christine. In addition, she is survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her family will be celebrating her life later this year. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Special Olympics on her behalf.
