Lee was born to David and Fannie Gorochowsky in Zvenegorodka, Ukraine on April 2, 1920. A town mentioned in the Tevye stories, this shtetl was subject to pogroms and attacks. By the 1920’s, much of the Jewish population began to move away towards safety. After David’s death as a result of such violence, Fannie took young Lee and her older sister, Anne, and emigrated to the United States, first to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York, where other family members had already settled. Lee went to school in Brooklyn, and there met the love of her life, Marvin Greenberg, through a cousin who went to school with them. The early years of their marriage were complicated by his leaving to serve with distinction in the army during WWII. Lee gave birth to their first child, daughter Paula, while Marvin was overseas, their second child, son Philip, after Marvin’s return, and later, their third child, daughter Ricki. For some of their marriage, Lee was a stay-at-home mom, and for some years she worked outside the home. The job from which she retired was in bookkeeping at Downstate Medical Center.
Lee and Marvin moved to Florida in 1983, and became involved in the politics of their local homeowners association, their synagogue, their community, and the Democratic Party. Retirement brought with it many ways for them to stay active. Marvin passed away in Florida in 2001. Six years later Lee moved to Dallas, Texas to be near Paula, her children, and their children. Lee found a new life of activities through them, enjoying recitals, plays, athletic events, and often being the only great-grandmother at school celebrations. That was in addition to her many social activities, including her love of card games, at Highland Springs, where she lived for sixteen years. She spent her final year at Legacy Midtown, where the staff went out of their way to show her kindness and care, and to keep her engaged in bingo, concerts, movies, and other social activities. It was at Legacy that she celebrated birthday #104. And it was in the comfortable setting at Legacy, with caring staff and hospice attention, that she drifted away peacefully at 12:07 a.m. on April 29, 2024.
Lee is predeceased by her parents David and Fannie Gorochowsky, her husband Marvin Greenberg, and her sister Anne Cohen.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Paula, Philip, and Ricki, son-in-law Eric and daughter-in-law Sharon, her grandchildren Carrie, Adam, Joshua, Seth, and Ian, and her great-grandchildren Jacob, Sarah, Samantha, Maggie, Raena, Makai, Zayli, Indigo, Jude, and Theo.
May Lee’s memory always be for a blessing.
