On Friday, July 5, our beautiful mother left her earthly tent and is now safe in the arms of her Savior. She lived a robust and full life that praised King Jesus and glorified her Heavenly Father. Her beautiful “country alto” voice was known and loved by so many. I have the most amazing memories of singing with her, be it at church, gospel meetings, singings or lectureships or in so many homes and living rooms I can’t count. Her loving and compassionate spirit lifted so many in times of need. She loved to serve.
Now, she is reunited with her mother and daddy that she loved so much. Outpourings of love and grief are already flooding in because so many people in so many places in this great country of ours knew, admired and truly loved my mama.
Mom loved her family, her church family and this great country of ours. All three of the men she called sons, Lee, Dean and Joe, served in the United States Marine Corps. She was proud that multiple grandsons served in the US Navy and US Air Force. She was even more proud of the fact that she had a son, grandson, granddaughter and grandson-in-law all serving as ministers. She was active in community affairs and local politics. She loved to play games with friends and family and playing the ukulele with her club. She loved the pool and she loved the beach.
She graduated from Orange High School and was very active in her high school years playing on her championship volleyball team as well as marching in the band. She was active with her classmates at the reunions and annual gatherings. She knew everyone and if she didn't, she’d get to know them and then come to find out they already had mutual friends and acquaintances.
Mom loved to sing whether in the high school choir, at church, the Pepperdine Lectures, or an RJ Stevens sight singing school. She even filled in singing alto with the famous Chuck Wagon Gang. She loved Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. She really loved listening to Anne Murray, and there was a time in the 1970’s that she even had her hair cut almost identical to Anne. On occasion, our long time family friend Glenn McCoy would go around to other tables at a restaurant and announce that she WAS Anne Murray. 😃Mom and I would regularly be called to sing at funerals. And on just about any given Sunday, she would find the weekly area-wide signing and she’d take as many as she could with her. I can’t remember a gospel meeting where someone wouldn't come up to us afterwards and say, “I knew Marcia was here when I heard that alto part.”
Some call her Marcia, others grandma. She was “Hun” to so many because that is what she addressed so many as. Katie Sue couldn’t say grandma, so she renamed her Lala, and that stuck. To Dean and me, she was mom or mama, unless she was in trouble and then we called her mother. (A term that would regularly bring a disapproving look from her!) I brought many friends home for the weekends when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton. Some came for a weekend, some for more. Aaron Robertson came back over and over and loved the home that she nurtured for so many. She was an only child but she made up for it by loving friends and relatives alike with so much love that you would have thought that she was YOUR sister, mother, aunt or Lala!
So now, when you go to worship, sing a little louder and prouder knowing that she is at home singing with the angels.
We would love to have you join us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday July 20, 2024 at 10:30 am at The Canyon Church of Christ located at 6264 E.
