Margaret Anne Hillig, age 53, passed away peacefully at her parents residence in Plano on Saturday morning after a very brief battle with cancer. “Peggy” as she was known to her family was born on October 19, 1962 in The Bronx New York to parents Kenneth Joseph Hillig and Mary Anne Ellis Hillig. She graduated from University of Texas Dallas with a bachelor’s degree and earned her master’s degree from Texas Women’s University. For 19 years she was a member of the team at Presbyterian Hospital Plano serving as a physical therapist. There she was known as “Maggie” to her co-workers, friends and patients.
Peggy’s love of exploration and learning lead her to a second career. For several months a year when not helping her physical therapy patients, she worked as a tour guide for Tauck Tours. Her specialty was the Republic of Ireland. She was the only American certified by the Irish government as a government certified tour guide. She traveled extensively beyond Ireland and visited all seven of the world’s continents. When not traveling abroad, Peggy lived in Plano for 25 years. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed cooking.
Peggy is survived by her parents Kenneth and Mary Hillig of Plano, by her aunt Virginia Murphy of Ormand Beach, Florida and by several cousins in the United States and Ireland. Visitation and Viewing will be on Wednesday July 13, 2016 from 4-7 pm followed by Wake and Vigil at 7 pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Plano. The following morning, July 14th at 11 am a funeral mass will be celebrated at the church followed by a reception in the church hall. The family suggests memorials be made to the Las Mercedes’ Social Justice Ministry in care of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 5100 West Plano Parkway, Plano, TX 75093. This ministry funds several projects to help impoverished children of Las Mercedes Honduras. In lieu of flowers please make donations to any cancer foundation.
