Melina Gutierrez Hodge died Friday, July 16, 2021 at age 87. Melina was born on December 2, 1933 in Belen (Bosque), NM, the daughter of Abram and Gregoria (Montano) Gutierrez. She graduated from Belen High School (1951) and NM State University (1955) with a BS degree in Home Economics Education and then taught in Mountainair, NM. She married the love of her life, John, on December 26, 1956 in Las Cruces, NM. Melina and John moved to Dallas in 1957 when he went to work for the Magnolia Petroleum Company, later Mobil Oil. In December 1979, John went on loan to Aramco in Saudi Arabia. Melina and John lived there for 6 years and traveled throughout the world. She loved learning about other cultures. After returning to Dallas in 1985, they became charter members of Prince of Peace Catholic Community. She and John moved to Highland Springs retirement community in 2010.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2017; her parents; sisters Betty and Lucille; and her brothers, Ralph and Jack. She is survived by her children Karla Kay of Georgetown, TX; Teresa Thornton of Arlington, TX, and Mark (Kathy) of Phoenix, AZ; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; her sister, Margie; nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 5100 Plano Parkway West, Plano, TX at 12 noon, Saturday, September 25. Inurnment will be in the columbarium in the Resurrection Garden at Prince of Peace following Mass. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or a charity of your choice. There will be a livestream of the Mass that will also allow viewing later.
