Neva Jean Rehm Smith was born June 5, 1936 to Alice Lily Rutherford and Tony Scott Rehm. Neva graduated in 1954 from Santa Anna High School. She attended Tarleton State University, played clarinet in the marching band, and completed her business degree at The University of Texas in 1958.
Growing up on a farm in the community of Rockwood Texas was a significant part of Neva’s life. She cherished small-town living, close-knit relationships with her cousins, and the entire Rockwood community. She married the love of her life, Francis Gene Smith, in Rockwood on October 11, 1958. They settled for a time in Tyler, Texas where their three boys were born before finally relocating to Richardson in 1972.
Neva loved children and teaching. She frequently hosted neighborhood gatherings, and she loved decorating for seasons and holidays. A few years after the family moved to Richardson, Neva began a teaching career of more than 30 years at The Children’s Workshop in Plano where she held fond memories of her students, families and colleagues. Neva was a member of The Heights Church in Richardson and cherished her Sunday school class.
Neva passed away December 25, 2022 at her home in Richardson peacefully surrounded by family. Christmas was her favorite time of year, so it is fitting that she passed on this day. Her family holds fond memories of time around her table, her gentle spirit, and her infectious laugh. Neva will truly be missed and remain forever in our hearts.
Neva was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Mary Ella Rehm Esslinger, and her brother, Wade Rehm.
She is survived by two sisters; Bobbie Robicheaux of North Richland Hills, Texas, Vita Gilpin of Laredo, Texas; three sons, Jeff Smith and his wife, Mariana, Greg Smith and his wife, Lil, and Todd Smith and his wife, Alexa; four grandchildren, Anca and her husband Karim, Will and his wife Caroline, Ali and her husband Hayes, and Dean; a host of nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life for Neva is being planned at Rockwood in the Spring. Neva and Gene will be interred together at this time, their final resting place. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Neva’s memory to the Rockwood Cemetery Association, PO Box 695, Rockwood, TX 76873. Please note Neva’s name on the memo line.
