

She joined the Air Force in 1955 and served until 1962. Upon returning to civilian life she began her long career in public service with the federal government, which included working in the Office of Personnel Management and for The Comptroller of the Currency during her 35-year career.
During her career she was an active member of FEW (Federally Employed Women) to improve the status of women employed in the federal government. She was also nominated for the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame.She married Claude Rushing in 1966. Together they raised their son Michael, and daughter Stacey. Her passion for life revolved around her family and close friends. She loved bowling and was an avid card player. In the community she was an advocate for voters rights. She leaves to cherish her memory her brothers Arthur Thomas, and William Thomas, Sister Barbara Pool, Aunt Lula Flakes, Son Michael Rushing, Daughter Stacey Smith, Grandsons Jason Thomas, and Justin Smith, Great Grandson Roman Thomas, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Two sisters Thelma Carvin and Erma O’Neal and her former husband Claude Rushing preceded her in death.
