Phyllis Jean Cabeza, 98, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on the evening of July 10, 2026, just weeks shy of her 99th birthday on September 1st. Born in 1927, in Lafayette, Indiana, Phyllis lived a long, remarkable life defined by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Raul Cabeza; her parents, Howard and Mabel Ricks; her brother, Francis Ricks; and her sisters, Alberta de Faria and June Hatke.
Shortly after graduating from high school and marrying Raul, whom she met at a dance at Purdue University, Phyllis moved with him to Cuba, where they spent 16 years building a home and raising their children, Nancy Loret de Mola and Rene Cabeza. In 1960, as political circumstances changed, Phyllis made the difficult decision to leave Cuba first with Nancy and Rene. Raul later sized an opportunity to join them in the United States, reuniting the family and beginning a new chapter together. Their courage and steadfast commitment to one another shaped the family's story for generations.
Phyllis is survived by her sister, Carol Border, and Carol's husband William; her daughter, Nancy; her son, Rene and spouse, Kim; and many nieces and nephews who adored her. Though she did not have grandchildren, she poured her love into every member of her extended family, offering steady wisdom, gentle humor, and unwavering kindness.
Throughout her life, Phyllis had a deep affection for animals and cared for many beloved dogs and cats. Her compassion extended to every creature she welcomed into her home, each one receiving her gentle attention and devoted care.
Her legacy is one of strength, sacrifice, love, and quiet generosity. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
An intimate gathering will be held for her local friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the local animal shelter of your choice, in Phyllis' honor.
