Richard “Dick” Volny Sprangel of Plano, TX passed away on January 28, 2025. He was born to V.M. and Madge Sprangel in Tulsa, OK on January 14, 1941. He was married to his sweetheart of 36 years, Raquey Sprangel, on October 29, 1988. Even though he was a lifelong Sooners fan, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1965. After graduating, he spent 34 years at Caterpillar, traveling all over the United States and the provinces of Canada, improving their product, advising folks on the finer points of diesel engines and keeping truckers on the road. Always, he appreciated “out-of-the-box” thinking and ideas from the people he would interact with throughout his life.
After retiring, he and Raquey took to RVing and travelled much of the United States, spending months in a location, discovering the beauty of each area and meeting wonderful, different people from all walks of life.
He loved to hike, which he did up until the last month of his life. Mountain vistas, coastlines, historical settings and, near the end, here in our own neighborhood, he was up and about, ready to take on the day.
Most of all, he loved his Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ, who found him midlife, saved him and changed him, which those who have known him a long time can attest to. Being loved by the Lord made it possible for him to love better all those around him including those who survive him.
He is survived by his wife, Raquey, his daughter, Sheila Kraybill and her husband, Todd, of Stillwater, OK, his grandchildren, Kaylee (Alex) Johnson of Santa Rosa, CA, Jamie (Jeff) Millard and Sam Kraybill of Stillwater, OK and great-grandson, Wesley Johnson of Santa Rosa, CA.
Other surviving family members of note are his nephew, Kyle Sprangle and his wife, Melissa, niece, Kristina Gottlieb, great-nephews, Coleman (Jessica) and Pierson Sprangle and great-nieces, Elise Sprangle and Sophia Gottlieb. A dear cousin, Barbara “BCF” Wall of Dripping Springs, TX, a sister, Melissa “Missy” Slagle, of Tulsa, OK, and cousin, Bill (Linda) Broaddus of Volente, TX also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom.
