After high school graduation, Tommie enlisted in the United States Army in January 1951 and was honorably discharged in February 1954. Tommie soon found employment as a nurse, at the VA Hospital in East Northport and retired in 1993 after over 40 years of service.
In 1955, Tommie met the love of his life Maxine Pearsall. They married on October 11, 1958. They made a lovely home in West Babylon. In January 1961, they welcomed a son Tommy Jr. and in 1968 daughter Penelope was born.
Tommie took great pleasure in caring for his home and yard. He was often seen cutting grass and planting flowers. He was proud of his vegetable garden, which was full of collards, tomatoes and cucumbers. Friends were always around Tommie. As soon as you met him, you had a friend for life. You could always count on his help at anytime. Another passion of Tommie's was being vice president of the Western Suffolk Rifle & Pistol Club, where he coordinated dances and other activities.
Tommie is survived by his wife of 56 years Maxine, his son Tommy Jr., his daughter Penelope, his son-in-law Daniel Brooks, his brothers Preston, Goner, Jimmy, Joe, Henry and Bennie and his sisters Emma, Velma and Maddie plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The Owens family wants to thank everyone for the love and support they have received as well as the flowers, phone calls and concern during this time of bereavement.
