Catalina (Katie/Cata) Hernandez Carrillo

Born January 16th, 1924 in El Paso Texas. She married Mike L. Carrillo in 1942 and they were married 69 years until his passing in 2011. They had two sons, Mike Jr. and Porfirio. Grandma worked in packing sheds and then as a foreman overseeing field laborers in Delano for over 40 years. She worked hard to make sure her sons could attend Catholic school. Her early sacrifices paid off as their education eventually helped both attain long and very successful careers with CDCR.

Our Grandma was many things: a storyteller, strong-willed, straight-forward, witty, STUBBORN, funny, but above all else, she loved her family. She stayed sharp until the very end because she liked wordsearch puzzles and good conversation. She enjoyed cooking (her breakfasts were the best), family get-togethers, bingo night and numerous trips to Vegas and Tachi Casino over the years. She was talented at crocheting, knitting, sewing, embroidering, making quilts, being a caretaker, growing plants/flowers, and always had a way with dogs (Wolf, Lobo, Peanuts, Duke, and Rusty). Rusty was her last loyal watchdog and companion who never left her side and reportedly understood English and Spanish.

On November 5th, 2020, our beloved grandmother, 96, closed her sparkling eyes for the last time and entered eternal sleep. We believe in our hearts and minds she was greeted by her viejo Mike L. Carrillo and her two sons, Mike Jr and Porfirio (Pete) on the other side. She is also pre-deceased by her parents, Santiago and Herlinda and four brothers Tommy, Gilbert, Santiago, and Raymond. She is survived by her siblings (Gilbert, Lupe, Luisa, Terre, Linda and Ramona), 6 grandchildren (Michael, David, Sandra, Adrienne, Christopher and Jeffrey), 9 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren.

Our family would like to thank her Caretaker Toni and nephew Fernando Bravo, both who made sure our grandma was well taken care of. Over the years, her grandchildren took turns spending the weekend with her, making sure her yard was maintained, taking her to the casino, and made sure she spent the holidays surrounded by family, which always made her the happiest. While we are heart-broken she is no longer with us, she has left us with countless memories, a wonderful legacy, and she will forever live in our hearts.

Due to COVID restrictions, a reception will not be held but a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. Once we are all able to come together, we will make sure to have some good food, music and share some fond memories of our beloved Grandma.
